Quarterbacks playing better/worse than their box-score stats suggest - PFF
Another player where terrible fumbles are getting hidden behind the passing stats, Kirk Cousins is off to a poor start despite what his No. 10 ranking in passer rating may indicate. He has six turnover-worthy plays and only two interceptions to show for them, but for Cousins, it’s been more about the poor quality in each of these plays. Against the Packers in Week 2, Cousins put the ball on the ground twice, while also heaving a prayer into the end zone for an interception with the game on the line. In addition to the turnover-worthy plays, Cousins has been aided by 55.2% of his yards coming after the catch, second-highest in the NFL among quarterbacks with at least 100 attempts. Turnover luck combined with above-average production (due to his playmakers and scheme) has led to a 100.1 passer rating that is not even close to telling the story of Cousins’ season through five weeks.

Vikings rushing yards: 115. First, a bit on how we arrived at this number. The Eagles top rated run defense is set to go against the Vikings No. 3 rated rushing attack — led of course by Dalvin Cook. Philly has allowed 63 yards on the ground per game while Minnesota has run for 166. Splitting the difference gives us around 115. Cousins has potent weapons in the air in Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs, but the Eagles still think getting Minnesota to be one dimensional is a winning strategy. They have not allowed a 100-yard rusher in ages, but they’ll have their hands full in these next two games going against Cook, and Ezekiel Elliott in Dallas next week. Still, we’re optimistic that the Eagles run defense is, in fact, legit. UNDER.
Game Preview – PHI at MIN - Iggles Blitz
I’m really interested to see if the DL can build off last week’s showing. I’m certainly not expecting another 10 sacks, but can they make plays and get regular pressure? The Vikings OL struggles in pass pro so the Eagles should have the advantage up front. As for the Eagles offense, the OL will have a big test of their own. Can Jason Peters control Danielle Hunter? Can Lane Johnson handle Everson Griffen? If you block them, there are plays to be made. If the Vikings DL wins the battle, watch out. DeSean Jackson is out again. I wonder if there will be some designed plays to get the ball to Nelson Agholor. The Eagles need more out of their WRs. Alshon Jeffery is reliable, but someone else must make plays. You can’t expect TE Zach Ertz to carry the passing game.

In 14 games as underdogs the past three seasons, the Eagles are 9-5 straight up. That’s included 35-plus points against some of the game’s brightest defensive minds — Bill Belichick, Wade Phillips and Zimmer. I don’t think this game follows quite the same script, but the Eagles like being in this role, and they’ll play well. Nate Gerry stats are my new favorite stats. We told you earlier in the week that Gerry’s 51-yard INT return against the Jets Sunday was the longest ever by an Eagles linebacker in Philadelphia — at any stadium. Now, how about this: Gerry is the first player the Eagles have drafted in the fifth round with three career interceptions since cornerback Eric Everett in 1988 and 1989. The only other one since 1960 is a linebacker named Dick Absher, who the Eagles drafted in the fifth round in 1967 and had three INTs for the Saints and Eagles from 1969 through 1972. This is where you need to play your best football.” The Eagles’ experienced offensive line has warriored through five games with admirable durability and performance. Jason Peters and Lane Johnson have controlled the edges, and they’ll need their best games here to win against Danielle Hunter and Everson Griffen. Kelce and guards Isaac Seumalo and Brandon Brooks will have their hands full against Minnesota tackles Linval Joseph and Shamar Stephen. The entire line, along with Wentz and the skill-position players, must be on the same wavelength with communication and recognition as they see Minnesota rotate through its pre-snap gyrations as they send different pressure packages.
Vikings vs. Eagles: Key Match-ups - Daily Norseman
Vikings Offensive Line vs. Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham. Vikings right guard Josh Kline will not play on Sunday due to a foot injury, which leaves Dakota Dozier in his stead. That’s not ideal against the likes of Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham. That match-up for the Vikings offensive line was going to be key to begin with, but without Kline it becomes a tougher assignment. A big element in this match-up is how the Eagles position Graham and Cox. I would expect Cox to be on Dozier most of the game, and Graham to play a wide weak-side defensive end position (sometimes known as ‘LEO’).

Two weeks ago, Kirk Cousins’s failures against Chicago frustrated teammates enough to spill into the public. Adam Thielen was visibly angry on the field and sideline, Stefon Diggs may or may not have requested a trade midweek, and head coach Mike Zimmer told Cousins to stop podcasting. The Vikings’ 28-10 win against the Giants placated the team for the week, but Minnesota’s issues are mostly just paused, not fixed. New York’s pass defense is among the worst in football. That Cousins found Thielen for 130 yards against the Giants’ glacial secondary is not particularly impressive. Philadelphia’s secondary is not much better than New York’s considering the Eagles’ injuries, so perhaps the Vikings can find similar success this week at home. But the Eagles had 10 sacks last week against the Jets, and Cousins is notorious for struggling under pass pressure. If Cousins resumes struggling Sunday, the Vikings may be bickering again.

The key to this game could be the Eagles slowing down Dalvin Cook. While he’s been one of the most productive running backs in the league so far, the Eagles have allowed the fewest rushing yards per game. If they do slow him down, the Vikings might have a hard time putting points on the board. I can see a path for the Eagles to win this game outright, making the points even more appealing.

RB Jordan Howard (Philadelphia Eagles): Howard had the game against Green Bay in Week 4 (32.5 points) and everybody ditched Miles Sanders. Not so fast, fellas. Howard average points per game sit at 13.1 but that’s all due to that game—in which he rushed for 82 yards, added 28 more receiving, and was able to score three touchdowns. Other than that, Howard only has one more 10-plus points game and his start of the season was mediocre at best. A touchdown-dependent guy as they get.

Davis re-assumes the top spot after catching one pass for 11 yards in Week 4 for the Redskins before being cut, not getting re-signed to Washington’s practice squad then getting added by the Eagles’ savvy decision-makers. With DeSean Jackson still ailing, Nelson Agholor not producing at a high rate, and inconsistent play from Mack Hollins, Davis has a decent chance to eventually get the call-up in Philly.

People have been asking why isn’t Jordan Reed on IR after he missed the first 5 games of the season. Adam Schefter reports the Redskins will finally be placing Reed on IR, which should end his 2019 season. The question is will it also end his time in Washington, and possibly the NFL? [BLG Note: Reaves originally signed with the Eagles as an undrafted rookie free agent last year.]

Honestly, the injuries are the thing I’m most concerned with. I thought the offensive line was well set prior to the season, as Cameron Fleming and others were at least adequate last year. Sunday, however, Fleming was a turnstile. And it seems like every player on the offensive line has either missed time or had some nagging injuries. But I’m with you. I thought the Cowboys had a really good offseason and I’m not going to let a couple of difficult, close losses where the team made a handful of dumb mistakes change that. On paper this should be a relatively easy road victory. But after that... wow does the schedule get tough. Between division games, the Patriots, the NFC North and facing another first-place team (Rams) there’s barely a breather after this Sunday. We’ll soon find out who’s got the pulse of this team... the optimists or the the pessimists.
Cowboys likely without both starting offensive tackles - PFT
The Cowboys probably have to face the Jets without both of their starting offensive tackles today. Right tackle La’el Collins and left tackle Tyron Smith are both listed as questionable, but Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Collins is out and Smith has only a “slight chance” to go.
Jets activate Brandon Copeland, waive Luke Falk - Gang Green Nation
Falk started the season for the Jets on the practice squad. He was called up to the active roster prior to the second game of the season to back up Trevor Siemian after Sam Darnold’s mono diagnosis. He was then elevated to the starting lineup after Siemian’s season-ending ankle injury. Apparently his poor play was enough to allow David Fales to leapfrog him on the depth chart. Fales was the backup quarterback to Falk the last two games. Now he will be Darnold’s backup tomorrow.

Half of our panel doesn’t think Washington interim head coach Bill Callahan will fare much better. There are high stakes on the line too. It looks like a foregone conclusion that neither team makes the playoffs. However, the loser will be likely be the favorite to finish the season with the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Usually it’d be a bad decision to pick the Dolphins to win, but this time it actually makes some sense.
