More of the latest Browns news and notes from around the web in today’s dose of the Sunday Dawg Chow.
- Sunday is final chance for Browns to win at home before November (ohio.com) - When great expectations were placed on the Browns in the offseason, no one could have fathomed them failing to prevail at FirstEnergy Stadium through the first week of November.
- If Baker Mayfield really is Brett Favre, then you have to accept these struggles (cleveland.com) - If you love a comparison at its jorts, you must accept a comparison at its interceptions. When Baker Mayfield copied Brett Favre’s draft day pose, lying on his bed in jean shorts surrounded by family, the world embraced the comparison between brash youngster and brash oldster. As Mayfield has thrown eight interceptions in the first five games of this season, the Favre comparison can’t be forgotten. Because Favre threw more picks than anyone in NFL history.
- What is wrong with the Browns? Don’t ask. (forbes.com) - If theories were sausages, Cleveland would be up to its armpits in bratwurst. Everyone, it seems, has a theory on what’s wrong with the Browns, and how to fix it. There is no consensus. The only thing everyone agrees on is that something is wrong, very wrong, with the team that just a few months ago was everyone’s training camp darlings. But then the season started.
- Swagger to make his final run on Sunday (clevelandbrowns.com) - Swagger, the beloved, 145-pound bullmastiff who has been with the Browns since 2014, will make his final run onto the field Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium. The pre-game tradition, though, isn’t going anywhere, and it’s staying in the family.
NFL:
- Redskins place tight end Jordan Reed on injured reserve (Washington Post) - The Washington Redskins placed tight end Jordan Reed on injured reserve Saturday as he continues to deal with the effects of a concussion suffered in the team’s third preseason game. The move is likely to end his season before it begins.
- NFL Week 6 injuries: Todd Gurley ruled out while Tyreek Hill, Alvin Kamara among questionables (CBS Sports) - Todd Gurley headlined the injury report on Friday. He’ll do so again on Saturday. The Rams’ All-Pro running back was initially announced as doubtful for Los Angeles’ home game against San Francisco by head coach Sean McVay. Gurley, who has been dealing with a quadriceps injury, was inactive during the Rams’ first two practices in preparation for Sunday’s game. On Saturday, the Rams confirmed he will not play and signed running back John Kelly to the active roster.
- Little-used WR Ryan Switzer is Steelers’ emergency QB (NFL.com) - Ready or not, Devlin Hodges is taking over as the Steelers starting quarterback. Following a season-ending injury to Ben Roethlisberger and the subsequent Week 5 loss of a concussed Mason Rudolph, the undrafted rookie out of Samford is stepping in and looking to step up. However, with the way things have gone for those under center in Pittsburgh, what happens if Hodges finds a similar unfortunate fate?
- Antonio Brown wants to return to the NFL (ESPN) - Despite saying last month that he wouldn’t play in the NFL anymore, wide receiver Antonio Brown wants to resolve his off-field issues so he can get back onto the field soon, sources told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Sources said Brown hopes to have his playing status cleared up in the next few weeks before signing with an NFL team.
