Following his injury, he’s going to miss a few games
With the way the NFL rotates their schedules each season, the NFC North matches up with the AFC West in 2019. That means that all four of the NFC North clubs play the Kansas City Chiefs and their quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, the son of former Minnesota Twins pitcher Pat Mahomes. (Oh, and also the reigning NFL MVP, if you’re into that sort of thing.)
Last night, in the Chiefs’ 30-6 pasting of the Denver Broncos on Thursday Night Football, Mahomes suffered what appeared to be a pretty nasty knee injury that saw his kneecap slide out of place. According to our friends at Arrowhead Pride, however, it sounds like their team has avoided the worst.
Patrick Mahomes’ MRI was, in the words of a league source, “good” and it “turned out to be a best-case scenario.” Prior to MRI, team believed best-case scenario was Mahomes missing “about three games.”

If that’s the case, and Mahomes does miss the Chiefs’ next three games, he’ll miss two of their games against NFC North opponents. They host the Packers on Sunday Night Football in Week 8 before hosting the Vikings on Sunday afternoon in Week 9.
From a purely matchup-based perspective, not having to face Mahomes is obviously a positive for the Vikings. The guy does things that defy pretty much everything because of his physical gifts, and there are times where even if your defense does everything right Mahomes will make them look foolish.
From a fan’s perspective, though. . .man, I would like to see the Minnesota defense match up against the Chiefs’ offense at full strength with Mahomes running things. I suppose there’s a chance they could see him, but I doubt the Chiefs would want to run the risk of bringing him back too early and making things worse.
If Mahomes doesn’t lead the Chiefs in Week 9 at Arrowhead Stadium, the Vikings won’t match up with him. . .in the regular season, at least. . .until the Chiefs make their first visit to U.S. Bank Stadium in 2023. (The last time these two teams met, the Vikings were playing their home games at TCF Bank Stadium.)
Here’s hoping that Patrick Mahomes’ injury is the “best case” that the Chiefs and their fans are hoping for and he’s back doing awesome things on the field in time for the stretch run.
