Football stats make the world go round!
While your Houston Texans are on a much needed and well-earned break this week, the NFL stats machine keeps rolling. Since there is no direct opponent this week, let’s take a look at how the Texans rank against the rest of the NFL.

- The Houston Texans are currently 6-3, the same place they were last year at the mid-point. At worst, they’re still poised to be a Wild Card playoff team in the AFC. At best they win the AFC South once again and move on to bigger and better things.
- Texans head coach Bill O’Brien is currently 49-44, good for a .527 win percentage, giving him the highest win/loss percentage of the three long-term Texans coaches (Dom Capers ended at .281 and Gary Kubiak at .488).
- Guy Chamberlain coached the Canton Bulldogs to a .784 win percentage, going undefeated in his first 2 (of 6) seasons coaching the legendary franchise.
- John Madden ended his reign of AFC West terror with the Oakland Raiders at .759, one of the only coaches in NFL history to never have a losing season. Madden retired with the highest win-loss percentage of any coach with 100+ wins.
- Vince Lombardi, widely considered the greatest coach in NFL history, left the game with a .738 win loss percentage.
- Bill Belichick currently owns the best active win-loss number with .673 and 16 consecutive winning seasons.
- The Texans’ offense currently ranks #3 in the NFL in yards per game with 396.7.
- The New York Jets are bringing up the rear with 223.5 yards per game.
- Houston is 13th in passing yards per game with 253.9.
- The Texans’ run game is ranked 5th with 142.8 yards per game.
- Houston’s version of Michael Jordan has hurdled the same player into the same end zone two times for a total of 12 points.

- Deshaun Watson ranks 5th in quarterback rating among QBs who have thrown more than 50 passes. He has a rating of 107.1.
- Atlanta’s Matt Schaub is 4th with a rating of 108.7.

- DeAndre Hopkins ranks 2nd among all wide receivers with 68 catches for 665 yards and 4 touchdowns.
- Albert Wilson of the Miami Dolphins ranks dead last (102nd place) among wideouts with at least 10 catches, having hauled in 10 for 58 yards.
- Carlos Hyde is 10th in the league with 704 rushing yards on 149 attempts, good for a 4.7 yard per carry average.
- Christian McCaffrey is #1 with 881 yards on 165 carries. Derrius Guice of the Washington Redskins is currently posting the worst yards per carry average of running backs with 10+ carries and 1.8 yards per attempt.
- Houston’s defense is currently middle of the pack with 21 sacks, good enough for 18th place. Whitney Mercilus leads the Texans with 5.5 sacks.
- The Carolina Panthers lead the NFL with 34 sacks, while Tampa Bay’s Shaquil Barrett has 10.5 sacks.
- The Texans’ D ranks 10th in total tackles with 403.
- The Redskins’ defense is #1 with 451, while the Saints is #32 with 320 - both numbers are skewed by the potency or lack-thereof from their respective offenses’ ability to stay on the field.
- Houston’s defense is 18th in interceptions, with 5 so far.
- New England’s D leads the NFL with 19 picks, while the Cincinnati Bengals are dead last with 2.
- Houston’s defense is tied at #1 with the Detroit Lions in forced fumbles with 13,
- The Miami Dolphins are bringing up the rear with only two.
There you have it, a barometer of where the numbers rank your Houston Texans. Current Power Rankings have them in 9th place league wide, good enough for Houston fans to claim “Best NFL Team in Texas” all day long.
