It’s almost fitting that the worst Cincinnati Bengals team in recent memory will be the team to face a Tom Brady-led New England Patriots team that’s finally staring down the jaws of decline. The Bengals have just one win over the Patriots in the last 17 years. In that victory back in 2013, Cincinnati held New England to its second-lowest point total since that season. Zac Taylor’s Bengals can only hope they hold the Patriots to a similar score this time around.
This is the first time the Patriots will play in Cincinnati since that game, and they’ll be greeted with even more animosity than they previously could’ve expected. Dominating the NFL news cycle is the franchise’s latest cheating scandal where a member of the Patriots’ organization reportedly filmed eight minutes of the Bengals’ sideline during their most recent game against the Browns.
The NFL world is nearly desensitized to the Patriots’ and their questionable ethics, so naturally, the overwhelming reaction to the news from the general public was simple: why cheat against the lowly Bengals?
While they’re sitting at the bottom of the league with a 1-12 record, the Bengals are doing their best to stay competitive week after week. Last Sunday was their seventh one-score loss of the season and their defense continues to verify a clear late-season surge. And although it might be cherry-picking, the Bengals have more wins than the Patriots this month. Sorry, not sorry.
Two-straight losses for Bill Belichick’s Patriots isn’t anything new, it happened twice last year before they went on to win another Super Bowl. Three-straight losses, however, hasn’t happened for Belichick since 2002. Marvin Lewis wasn’t even the Bengals’ head coach then.
