Let’s jump straight into this week’s questions:
Deathbybuddha (Stamepede Blue Comment): Thinking ahead, and hoping for a playoff spot, how do you see Campbell fitting back into the WR group? With a healthy TY, Funchess coming back, and Pascal playing well, doesn’t that put Campbell on the bench(4th or even 5th)?
Answer: Well let’s round up the Colts current wide receiver group; Hilton is still battling a calf injury, Funchess is not coming back off injured reserve, Rogers is heading to injured reserve and Campbell is trying to come back from a hand fracture. Campbell, when he does come back, will likely be the Colts wide receiver two or three depending on Hilton’s status. Colts need to see what they have in Campbell as he has been on the field playing sparingly so far in his rookie year.
JRBColts (Stampede Blue Comments): If the Colts should make the playoffs and clinch the division early, we could have some key players injured late in the year. Losing T.Y. hurt us against the Chiefs last year. How late can the Colts add players to the roster from the practise squad and other teams via trade before the end of the regular season?
Answer: It doesn’t look promising that the Colts even make the playoffs, let alone clinch the division. The Colts can add practice squad players to the roster all the way up to the last game of the season, but the trade deadline has come and gone, the trade deadline was October 29th.
Mr. Too Proud (Stampede Blue Comments): Is this defense better than last year or about the same? And where do you see the biggest difference between last year and this year?
Answer: This defense is better than last year, the defense has really taken a big step up from last year, especially after the first four weeks of the year looked a bit rocky. The defense has been able to continue its solid run defense (outside of one or two outlier games), the coverage seems a lot more consistent as well, as Matt Eberflus is able to mix it up, as opposed to playing just one coverage all the time last year. They're also putting more pressure on opposing quarterbacks. The defense has only allowed one 100 yard rusher this season and has sacked the quarterback more this year (2.8 sacks per game compared to 2.5 in 2018).
BritNick (Stampede Blue Comments): Was the team too hasty in allowing Deon Cain onto the waiver wire? The Steelers thought so. Ok, the Colts like Marcus Johnson for his speed and his initial input justified his activation but he has disappeared with Zac Pascal from the passing game and Cain won the job out of training camp . Is this a sympton of Reich’s conservative play-calling or a reflection on Brissett?
Answer: The Colts made the decision to release Deon Cain because he was flat out not performing and then brought him back to the practice squad because they realised even though he wasn’t performing he still has talent. If another team wants to sign a player such as Cain off the Colts practice squad it is totally up to the player if he wants to leave or stay and it was clear that Cain wanted to go as he signed with the Steelers. Reich's play calling hasn’t been conservative, he has tried to be as aggressive as possible considering the situation he is in with the offense.
FlannAllDayEvryDay (Stampede Blue Comments): Once, it definitely looked like Hooker let Hopkins fly by and allowed the corner to have 1 on 1 coverage. Another time, it was missed coverage since the texans appeared to have a fair catch in the end zone for the TD. This was a little confusing since it appeared that they covered well deep previously. I get that Fuller and Hopkins are a talented combination, I was just surprised it happened multiple times. I like how Matt Eberflus mixed up the defense like that and maybe said "lets take a chance on coverage" and it was just bad timing. It seems like taking that risk multiple times without a pass rush is just not the best call.
Answer: There did appear to be some coverage busts in the Texans game. Pierre Desir after the game said the TD in which Hopkins was let totally uncovered was on him and not Malik Hooker. I think the coverage busts were more on just poor execution rather than the wrong coverage call from Eberflus. The pass rush was very poor but the coverage on the back end was relatively good, considering.
