DRAFT Shutting Down, Merges Users (and Funds) with Fanduel

Draft.com Merges with Fanduel

If you’re like me, BestBall fantasy leagues are one of the best parts of the NFL offseason.

For those who never played BestBall before, think of it as a Mock Draft for money. You buy entry into a draft which can be fast or a slow draft. You draft your team and you’re done. There are no trades or waiver wires, not even a fantasy playoff. BestBall leagues automatically plug in your best possible scoring lineup each and every week, tally the scores and whoever has the most points at the end of the fantasy football season wins. It’s very straight forward and has become the new mock draft so to speak for hardcore fantasy football junkies.

One of the best places to do a BestBall league, was through a daily fantasy sports (DFS) site called DRAFT, originally called PlayDraft. The name was probably the worst part of the company, as DRAFT was one of the best DFS apps on the scene. Unfortunately, DRAFT is shutting down, and many hardcore fantasy fans are not thrilled with the news.

This morning, I was paid out my winning from the BestBall leagues that I joined throughout 2019 and offered an incentive to transfer my winning over to Fanduel. To be honest, I had planned to just join more BestBall leagues once they were available, but the merger has raised some questions moving forward.

Will Fanduel Offer BestBall Leagues in 2020?

Yes. They have made it official on Fanduel’s website.

While fantasy owners may not be thrilled with the Fanduel merger of DRAFT, the decision to do so actually came from higher up. Paddy Power Betfair bought DRAFT in 2017 for $48 million and then completed the acquisition of Fanduel in the summer of 2018. While Paddy Power’s main focus is on sports betting, they wouldn’t simply burn $48 million to shut down DRAFT, so merging it with Fanduel only makes sense.

From a business perspective, BestBall leagues allow companies the ability to hold thousands if not millions of dollars in league entries fees. With BestBall leagues opening as early as April, the amount of money that Fanduel could potentially hold in 2020 could be massive. For example, one million dollars earning 0.01% in a savings account would generate $100 of interest after a year, while a CD paying 2.5% would generate $25,000 of interest. I personally was in 13 leagues this year, investing $300 and I consider myself to be an average user. FanDuel has more than 8.5 million customers as of last reported in April of 2019.
