NFL Hotseats: NFC East

It’s onto the NFC for our look at the state of front offices. AFC North | AFC East | AFC South | AFC West |

We’re going to go around the league, looking at each division and seeing what vacancies could open up for Black Monday. Thankfully there probably won’t be any in Santa Clara, but a coach could bail to fill one of the vacancies elsewhere. Today, we have the NFC East.

We’re out of the AFC and going to the NFC. The NFC started their firings with Washington firing Jay Gruden. Not much more from there until Black Monday. Then, this dysfunctional division could get a full clean sweep of jobs. Philadelphia should be safe, but New York and Dallas both could be looking for new coaches.

Washington

Washington has all sorts of issues, some of them not a fault of head coach Jay Gruden. But Washington fired him early in the season anyways.

Once in the hunt and leading the division, the loss of quarterback Alex Smith not only deflated the team, but killed all their morale, especially when Smith’s post-ops have been nothing but trouble in infections.

Then comes the free agent acquisitions and draft picks. These were set up just to make Gruden fail and they haven’t done much better in his absence.

Washington also has been rotating quarterbacks, none of them Colin Kaepernick. They drafted Dwayne Haskins, but if he’s the answer is anyone’s guess. Case Keenum has had his time in the spotlight as well, but the less said the better. This is a place no one wants to go. Dan Snyder and Bruce Allen both have terrible reputations in the league and will be unable to get a splash hire onto their team. They say Bruce Allen is under the microscope, but we all know he’s not leaving.

New York Giants

And I thought Pat Shurmur was having the worst year of his life during his first season as Giants head coach. His second season is even worse. While he may or may not be a good coach, the quarterback rotation hasn’t been helping. Ben McAdoo has to be laughing his head off, because he’s the one who had the gall to bench Manning in 2017 and lost his job for it. Now, to be fair, it wasn’t what McAdoo did, but how he did it.

First there’s the quarterback position. They drafted Daniel Jones, but if he’s the future is anyone’s guess. Eli Manning definitely is not.

Then there’s the front office. Given his trades and decisions, it wouldn’t be surprising to see general manager Dave Gettleman fired, but there’s been no evidence to support this. GMs take a much longer amount of time to get whacked before coaches do. Given that it’s Gettleman’s second season as GM, he probably has another year, but nothing he’s done is inspiring.

But Shurmur? He’s had two years. He’s gone.

Philadelphia Eagles

Let’s be frank, the Eagles won the Super Bowl. Unless they won zero games for several years, there’s no way they would put this coaching staff under the microscope. That said, their season is a bit disappointing with them sitting at .500 as of this writing. The division is still up for grabs and they still have that Super Bowl win hanging over them. All is well here even without a playoff appearance. There is some work to do, but if this is what happens in 2020, THEN someone is on the hotseat.

Who should/will get fired: Nobody

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys win the award for manic/depressive team of the year. Sometimes you think head coach Jason Garrett will get canned and then something comes out to prove otherwise. But the excuses stop this year. No really, he’s getting fired. I’m serious.

I said those same words last year, and Garrett remains. This year, I’m saying the same thing: It’s time to move on.

One thing to remember is while Jerry Jones gives Garrett the votes of confidence in interviews, he’s done this several times before and whacked his coach before the season ends. I think some of us may remember the Wade Phillips firing fiasco years ago. Things are different. While Jones is ignoring questions or begging reporters to not make him fire Garrett, you know it’s coming.

This season has been a disaster. Garrett is out.
