Unofficial Browns head coach shopping list

Franchise should be looking for a person with experience and success

Now that the Freddie Kitchens experience is over and the movie will soon debut at RedBox, the Browns will need to get serious about finding his replacement.

Below is a comprehensive list of names that have been linked to the Browns’ coaching search. Omitted from this list are names once rumored to become a possibility: Ron Rivera and Matt Rhule. Rivera has already interviewed with the Washington Redskins and will be their next head guy. Rhule announced he was staying at Baylor.


Mike McDaniel

Technically, McDaniel has never been a coordinator although his current position states he is a coordinator for the running game. Was an “offensive assistant” with the Washington Redskins from 2011-2012 and with the Atlanta Falcons with the same title from 2015-2016. Was the Browns receivers coach in 2014.

It is difficult to imagine LaFleur getting any type of serious consideration, but the Browns have asked to speak to him during the 49ers bye week. He has coached at both the college and NFL levels. Was a coaching intern with the Browns in 2014. He has been San Francisco’s passing game coordinator since 2017.

Having built a quality program such as Oklahoma, Riley is s long-shot to become the Browns head coach, but there is interest. He is an offensive innovator, but has a problem keeping a top defense. Currently is 36-6-0 as a head coach and was named Big 12 Coach-of-the-Year in 2018.


Jim Caldwell

Caldwell has had success as a head coach with a record of 62-50. He has also been part of winning two Super Bowls. His offensive forte’ is quarterbacks and receivers. In his first two seasons with the Colts, they went 14-2-0 and 10-6-0 and lost in the Super Bowl to the Saints. Then the bottom fell out and finished 2-14-0 in 2011. While with the Lions, they went 11-5-0 his first year, then 7-9-0, and twin 9-7-0 seasons. Two years were playoff squads that lost in the first round each time. An extremely intelligent coach, he is the mainstay of the Patriots’ offensive success for so long. He went 11-17 as head coach of the Broncos and began his first season 6-0 only to finish 8-8-0. The following year the Broncos began 3-9-0 and he was fired. Was first hired by New England in 2001. 2007 Patriots set multiple offensive records. One of the top offensive minds in the NFL and an excellent play-caller. The Patriots this year are the league’s number 15 offense. Three different seasons has coached the Patriots to the league’s number one offense. McDaniels grew up in Canton, Ohio, went to McKinley High School and then played receiver at John Carroll University. His father Thom is an Ohio coaching legend.

Former All-American at Colorado and a Heisman finalist, became the running backs coach of the Minnesota Vikings wit Adrian Peterson in his heyday who led the league in rushing for two seasons. Hired by the Chiefs as their running backs coach before assuming the OC job last year. This year, the Chiefs are ranked number six overall, 5th in passing and 23th in rushing. Last year, in Bieniemy, Kansas City was the number one ranked offense which featured the league’s MVP in quarterback Patrick Mahomes.


Dennis Allen

Stefanski has been with the Vikings since 2006 as a position coach with running backs, tight ends and quarterbacks. In 2017, the New York Football Giants asked to interview him for their OC position under Pat Shurmur but was denied. In 2018, he was promoted to OC after John DeFilippo was fired after the 13th game, but did not assume play calling duties. This year Minnesota was 23rd in passing and 6th in rushing and ranked 16th overall in offense.

McCarthy and former Browns’ GM John Dorsey worked together in Green Bay. As head coach captured Super Bowl XLV in 2010. Was 2007 NFL Coach-of-the-Year after going 13-3-0 in only his second year at the helm. Compiled a 125-77-2 regular season record and 10-8-0 for the playoffs. Took the Packers to the playoffs nine seasons and three NFC Conference Championship Games. During his 12 year tenure, Green Bay only had three losing seasons. McCarthy’s offensive units were ranked in the Top 10 nine times while head coach.
