A loss on the defensive line
When the Minnesota Vikings signed away defensive end Eddie Yarbrough from the Buffalo Bills practice squad (which we told you about here), they needed to make a move to put him on the 53-man roster, as NFL rules mandate when you sign a player from another team’s practice squad. They’ve made that move, and it’s one that comes as a bit of a disappointment after what we’ve seen these past few weeks.
The Vikings have announced that rookie defensive tackle Armon Watts has been placed on injured reserve, which opens up a spot for Yarbrough on the main roster.
Watts was a sixth round pick of the Vikings this past April out of the University of Arkansas. He made the final roster out of Training Camp, but was inactive for every game in the first half of the season. He made his debut in the Sunday night game against the Dallas Cowboys and appeared in the Vikings’ last seven games of the regular season. In that time, he collected 1.5 sacks.
Watts was injured on one of those sacks on Sunday, a play where he stripped Mitchell Trubisky with the Bears recovering the loose ball. It seemed like Watts was really starting to come on in the late part of the season here, and hopefully his injury will be healed in time to allow him to fully participate in the offseason program. No specifics have been given on his injury to this point, just that it’s a “leg injury.”
The Vikings also made several moves on their practice squad. They released offensive lineman John Keenoy and placed defensive end Stacy Keely on injured reserve. To fill those two spots, they brought back defensive tackle Curtis Cothran and added cornerback Kemon Hall.
Cothran has spent time with the Vikings before, including spending most of the 2018 season on the Vikings’ practice squad. Hall was an undrafted free agent out of North Texas this past season and spent the preseason with the Los Angeles Chargers. He was originally signed to their practice squad, but was let go early on in the season. He was not with a team prior to the Vikings signing him today.
So, if you’re scoring at home, the Vikings’ 10-man practice squad currently looks like this:
- RB Tony Brooks-James
- QB Jake Browning
- LB Reshard Cliett
- DT Curtis Cothran
- WR Davion Davis
- TE Brandon Dillon
- CB Mark Fields
- DB Kemon Hall
- CB Nate Meadors
- WR Dillon Mitchell
