Happy New Year to everyone and thank you all for reaching out to me the last couple days. These last three days went from sad(losing, uncertain future) to unbelievable. Thankful for every memory with Redskins Nation and very excited for this next step in life with my baby girl. pic.twitter.com/YYzsEkms7E

Happy New Year everyone! The decade of destruction is OVER! Time to be better!
— Chris Russell (@Russellmania621) January 1, 2020
I’ve always had nothing but respect for @RiverboatRonHC . He’s a @CalFootball legend and every player I’ve ever talked to about him has nothing but positive things to say about him as a coach and how he affected their lives. I’m excited to have the opportunity to play for him. https://t.co/0aJAG6XINQ
— Nick Sundberg (@NickSundberg) January 1, 2020
Washington Redskins' owner Daniel Snyder made a great move. I'm not sure I've ever written that. I'm not sure anybody else has, either. Ron Rivera is the ideal coach to bring order to a dysfunctional organization. About Rivera: his job is special. But he'll never act as if he is.
— Tom Sorensen (@tomsorensen) December 31, 2019
My biggest question w/ #RonRivera is if he’s worthy of final say on player-personnel that he apparently is getting. But there’s no doubt that he can set culture. And there’s no doubt that he can coach. Days of #Redskins underachieving & flopping on defense now end. #HappyNewYear
— Al Galdi (@AlGaldi) January 1, 2020
I haven't listened to you since you trashed Sean Taylor after he was murdered protecting his family.
— Simone Love (@SimoneBett) January 1, 2020
Rivera coached in a division with Drew Brees and Matt Ryan.
I am not worried about Wentz or Dak.
Wentz gets hurt a lot. Dak success is having Zeke. Jones has Barkley. https://t.co/WHtn1b9wZj
Some media outlets already pissing on Redskins fans positivity. We know. We're doomed. No matter what. And we're not very bright for choosing to have a shred of hope with these latest changes. Thanks for giving us 24 hours of relief before the snark barrage resumed :)
— BGObsession (@BGObsession) January 1, 2020
While the Skins appear to be building a solid foundation, Dallas and the Giants are drifting aimlessly in a fog. All seems right with the world. I'm digging 2020 so far.
— BGObsession (@BGObsession) January 1, 2020
The official press release says the “who” will just be Rivera.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) January 1, 2020
That means no Dan Snyder, again.
I expressed a lot of skepticism yesterday when it was a rumor but now that he is officially my coach, I’m choosing to be optimistic & supportive from this point forward. He has a long road ahead but I’m hoping for the best. Posting this photo as a sign of support. LFG. HTTR. pic.twitter.com/p5GvYhIIYs

Rod Graves of the Fritz Pollard Alliance on the Redskins' decision to hire Ron Rivera: “The hiring of Ron Rivera is a win for diversity. Washington is getting a superior person and an outstanding Head Coach.”
— MarkMaske (@MarkMaske) January 1, 2020
Fans who think this a bad hire need to watch the effort from his former players. He took a team to the Super Bowl, but his offense just didn’t have enough. He inherits a young core with tremendous upside, a ton of cap room and top 3 draft picks in every round(no 2nd rd). #HTTR https://t.co/yn2tZgJmYI

Today's guest on the #Redskins Capital Connection podcast, @JourdanRodrigue from the Carolina Panthers beat, wrote an incredible profile on @RiverboatRonHC after his departure from Carolina.

Now, Snyder must let Rivera — a proven, winning football coach and leader — do what he is hired to do: rescue Washington from years of futility and rebuild them into a consistent playoff team, something the Redskins haven’t experienced in nearly 30 yearshttps://t.co/RlqbtGahUA
— Mike Jones (@ByMikeJones) January 1, 2020
New Washington HC Ron Rivera has hired former Raiders’ and Jaguars’ HC Jack Del Rio as the Redskins’ new defensive coordinator, per source. Rivera’s first big coaching hire in Washington.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 1, 2020
Jack Del Rio will reportedly call defensive plays under Ron Rivera. That's not unusual as Rivera also gave Sean McDermott and Steve Wilks the same duties in Carolina. Rivera, though, took over play-calling from Eric Washington when the defense struggled late last year.
— Matthew Paras (@Matthew_Paras) January 1, 2020
A year ago, the Redskins could not convince top DC's to come work here. Part of it was the fact that Gruden was entering on a hot seat etc. Part of it was that some of them felt the whole process was odd (Manusky still here!) and didn't trust the place. now? Jack Del Rio.
— John Keim (@john_keim) January 1, 2020
Here you go. I’ve been told by some to always look at the track record of a guy. In four years as a DC Del Rio’s D’s finished in the top 5 in either yards or points allowed 3 times. Skins haven’t done that since 2008. https://t.co/hzvZqio7Yk
— John Keim (@john_keim) January 1, 2020
Rivera called plays at Carolina but only really when his job became in jeopardy, I'm told by folks on the ground in Carolina. Otherwise others held those duties so Del Rio calling plays largely consistent for the new head coach's approach. https://t.co/PC5kgJ7KbA
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) January 1, 2020
Rapoport reporting Del Rio will call plays. Indicates to me that Del Rio will run his defense, which is more man-coverage based than Rivera’s predominantly zone based schemes.
— Mark Bullock (@MarkBullockNFL) January 1, 2020
Broke that down here: https://t.co/bh22PBBap5 https://t.co/Zxl3BS4hNO
If the reports of Jack Del Rio as DC are accurate I already like RR better than I ever did Jay Gruden
— Mark Phillips (@RedskinsReview) December 31, 2019
Gruden flat out refused to hire any DC that might be a threat to him as Head Coach
Jack Del Rio would be an imposing figure to any HC and Rivera doesn't care. #Redskins #HTTR
"In confirming his hire Wednesday morning, Del Rio said he would change the Redskins defense from a 3-4 scheme to a 4-3." https://t.co/SubeHSJ4EB
— Jake Russell (@_JakeRussell) January 1, 2020
Jack Del Rio has to like this, right?

— John Keim (@john_keim) January 1, 2020
2 members of Rivera's 2019 coaching staff in Carolina to consider for roles w/ the Redskins: Current Panthers DC Eric Washington and LB coach Steve Russ. Washington worked with the DL previously. Not sure they could pry away DL/game management coach/Panthers staple Sam Mills III.
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) January 1, 2020
Staying consistent on what I've heard about O'Connell.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) January 1, 2020
This is going to be a two-way interview. Rivera has to figure out if he wants Kevin, which I presume will happen. Kevin also has to figure out if he wants to stay. Rivera has to sell things will be VERY different. https://t.co/3e40GDFIT4
I'm not saying it's a lock O'Connell is going. I'm also not saying it's a lock he stays.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) January 1, 2020
One of the biggest pluses for Kevin staying is Haskins. He really liked working with him and he knows that if he can continue that growth, he's gonna have his pick of jobs down the line.
I've been excited too quick before but this at least looks like a pair that can take advantage of those 1st round picks on defense. Maybe we'll see DBs covering receivers instead of areas. https://t.co/vNg9irrGBZ
— Paul Conner (@P_ConnerJr) January 1, 2020
Last year, only the desperate would work for the #Redskins. Bruce gone, Rivera here, things are much different. https://t.co/8WHqqZCHIr
— Kevin Sheehan (@kevinsheehanDC) January 1, 2020
Ron Rivera has already been evaluating the coaching staff and working on putting his people in place that agree with his direction on changing the culture. Of the past staff, I have been told Kevin O’Connell would be the safest to stay. I’m sure decisions will be made soon. #HTTR
— Julie Donaldson (@JDonaldsonNBCS) January 1, 2020
Bill Callahan won't return to the Redskins under new coach Ron Rivera, per source. Callahan was Washington's offensive line coach from 2015-16 and became an assistant head coach/offensive line coach from 2017-19. He took over as the interim coach after... https://t.co/I76lx7RLnG
— John Keim (@john_keim) January 1, 2020
Still waiting official word on all the assistants. But OL coach Bill Callahan is out per source.
— John Keim (@john_keim) January 1, 2020
@john_keim Any word on Kyshoen Jarrett? I realize he's really low on the totem pole, but has a special relationship with the Redskins. I'm keen to hear that he has been retained in his role. https://t.co/2EwmuoAmLM
— billhorgan (@billhorgan2005) January 2, 2020
I am told Ron Rivera has already met with Kevin O’Connell, Randy Jordan, and Nate Kaczor. Nothing official aside from them meeting. #httr #redskins @NBCSWashington

Kerrigan
The productive Redskins edge defender is going into a contract year, but Keim tweets Kerrigan and previous Redskins management had engaged in extension talks in 2019. Kerrigan, 31, would like to stay with Washington on a third contract.
The Redskins' new head coach AND defensive coordinator are on Twitter. I gotta imagine not many, if any, other NFL teams can say that

I think the benefit of our new staff is that they have no attachments to the players.
— George Carmi (@Gcarmi21) January 1, 2020
Ideally they come in, self-assess, and make tough decisions to get their roster up to par.
Rivera was disregarded mid-year. I'm sure he feels he has something to prove this season. #Redskins https://t.co/tde0t4uA7F

Teams with the most snaps played by rookies this season:
— Field Yates (@FieldYates) January 1, 2020
1. Dolphins: 6,551
2. Giants: 6,372
3. Redskins: 5,428
4. Raiders: 5,236

Bill Callahan and Harry Hiestand are two of the best OL coaches in football and each are free agents on the market right now. Pretty significant. Definitely worth paying attention to where they end up because the teams that sign them will be better for it.
