Golden will replace Tem Lukabu as Cincinnati’s new linebackers coach.

The first of three coaching vacancies for the Cincinnati Bengals has been filled.

The Bengals have hired Al Golden to be their new linebackers coach, per NFL insider Mike Garafolo.

It was rumored that the Bengals could promote senior defensive assistant Mark Duffner to this role, but it seems Duffner will continue to serve in his same role from last year.

Golden, who was let go as the Detroit Lions’ linebackers coach a couple weeks ago, had been with Detroit since 2016. He was their tight ends coach from 2016-2017 before switching roles as their linebackers coach in 2018 and 2019.

Before coaching for the Lions, Golden was a collegiate head coach for 10 seasons. He coached the Temple Owls from 2006-2010 and then the Miami Hurricanes from 2011-2015. At Temple, Golden employed Bob Bicknell as his offensive line coach in 2006. Bicknell is currently the Bengals’ wide receivers coach. Golden achieved a total win-loss record of 59-59 before making the jump into the NFL.

With Golden hired, the Bengals now need to replace former cornerbacks coach Daronte Jones and former special teams assistant Brayden Coombs. Expect those hires to be announced in the near future.
