Ex-Giants coach interviews for offensive assistant position

The Carolina Panthers and new head coach Matt Rhule have reportedly completed an interview with former New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo.

The Athletic’s Joe Person reported that the Panthers spoke to McAdoo, who has spent the past two seasons out of football. The 42-year-old helped the Giants earn 11 victories in his first year as head coach in 2016 but was fired the following December after New York started 2-10.

Former Chargers head coach Mike McCoy has also spoken with Carolina, NFL Network noted. Both McAdoo and McCoy could be candidates for Carolina’s quarterbacks coach vacancy.

For Rhule the potential hire could add another offensive mind to a staff that has already added former LSU assistant Joe Brady as offensive coordinator. Rhule has just one previous NFL season under his belt, serving as an assistant for the Giants in 2012. Brady spent two years as an offensive assistant for the New Orleans Saints from 2017 to 2018.

McAdoo lasted just two years in New York, perhaps most infamously linked with the decision to bench veteran quarterback Eli Manning in favor of Geno Smith.
