Vikings place Mackensie Alexander on IR, downgrade Jayron Kearse to OUT

More secondary issues for the Vikings

The issues are really starting to pile up in the secondary for the Minnesota Vikings, as they made a couple of moves on Sunday that might leave that part of the defense scrambling.

On Friday, the Vikings officially placed cornerback Mackensie Alexander on injured reserve. Mackensie injured his knee in the Vikings’ regular season finale against the Chicago Bears and had surgery on his meniscus earlier this week. The team was reportedly holding out hope that he might be able to come back should they advance in the playoffs, but placing him on IR today brings that hope to an end.

To take Alexander’s spot on the roster, the Vikings promoted cornerback Nate Meadors from the practice squad. Meadors spent the preseason with the Vikings, and got a nice highlight with a pick-six in the preseason opener in New Orleans. He has been with the practice squad all season, and is now up on the big roster.

The Vikings have not yet signed anyone to take Meadors’ spot on the practice squad.

In another Friday move, the Vikings downgraded safety Jayron Kearse from “doubtful” to “out” for tomorrow’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. Kearse has been dealing with a foot injury for a few weeks, and this week it’s apparently just too much for him to overcome.

The Vikings were short-handed in the secondary last week against New Orleans and managed to emerge with a hard-fought victory. It looks like they’ll be in the same sort of shape tomorrow when they hit the field against the NFC’s top seed.
