Sean McVay hires Kevin O'Connell as Rams OC, passes on Joe Barry for DC

The next Sean McVay is now working for Sean McVay. Kevin O'Connell has reportedly been hired as the Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator. McVay calls the plays for the Rams, and said last month he wasn't sure if he would give up play-calling duties to his new OC. Last season the Rams had Assistant OC Jedd Fisch, Run Game Coordinator Aaron Kromer, and Pass Game Coordinator/QB Coach Shane Waldron on the offensive staff.

Kevin O'Connell spent the last three seasons with the Washington Redskins. He was elevated to offensive coordinator in 2019 after coaching QBs, and being the team's passing game coordinator last year. Early speculation had O'Connell keeping his OC job under new Head Coach Ron Rivera to maintain continuity with QB Dwayne Haskins Jr.

Word started getting out that Rivera was hiring offensive coaches from his Panthers staff which put doubt on O'Connell's future in Washington. He eventually got permission to speak with other teams, and the Redskins hired Rivera's QB coach in Carolina Scott Turner.

O'Connell is close with Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, and was reportedly in line to be his OC if he got a head coaching job. The only open HC job left is the Cleveland Browns which McDaniels interviewed for today. Either McDaniels isn't taking the Browns job, or O'Connell got a better opportunity in LA.

Rams are finalizing a deal to make former Redskins offensive coordinator Kevin O'Connell their offensive coordinator, per source. O’Connell succeeded McVay as OC in Washington, now will work with him in LA.

McVay also made changes to his defensive staff. Former Redskins interviewee Wade Phillip's isn't returning as defensive coordinator. Joe Barry, the guy who got the Redskins DC job over Phillips was reportedly getting interviewed to take his job. Barry has been the Rams Assistant HC/LB Coach for all 3 of McVay's seasons as HC. McVay went with Broncos OLB coach Brandon Staley instead.
