Many felt the scary helmet-to-helmet hit by Jadeveon Clowney on Carson Wentz during the wild-card game last weekend was worthy of a penalty and a fine. After reviewing the hit, however, the NFL has opted not to fine Clowney, per Mark Maske of the Washington Post. This end result lines up with what the refs said of the hit after Sunday’s game between the Seattle Seahawks and Philadelphia Eagles, which was that the hit was “incidental” and not egregious. The hit knocked Wentz out of the wild-card game for good, and he opened up on social media calling it a “scary” head injury. As for whether Clowney should have been fined or not, the video evidence of the hit shows he did spear Wentz with his helmet but that he also started his motion before Wentz was completely down. So, while the Eagles and their fans wish the hit had been penalized, the league perhaps made the right call here.
