For the second time in a week, the Raiders have signed a player out of the Canadian Football League. Last week it was running back William Stanback, and now it’s linebacker Derrick Moncrief.

Moncrief made several stops throughout his college career starting at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, where he earned JUCO All-American honors as a safety. After two years at the JUCO level, he transferred to Auburn for his junior season. After a 13-game stint at Auburn, he again made a move, this time to Stillwater, Oklahoma.
His first year at Oklahoma State was a redshirt year, and in the following season Moncrief played in 10 games, ending his colligate career.
In 2017 Moncrief continued his football career with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL. His most productive year in the league was this past season in 2019. He recorded 73 tackles, four sacks, three interceptions, and a forced fumble.
The performance landed him a spot of the CFL All-Star team. Like with Stanback, Moncrief was granted his release from the Roughriders in order to seek opportunities in the NFL; a plan that worked out well for both men.
Moncrief will join a motley crew of linebackers and that was the defense’s weakest link by far. With the roster as is currently constructed,!he should receive every opportunity to compete for a spot with the team in training camp.
