Combine QB Workout Results: Justin Herbert impresses, both passing and in physical testing

NFL: Combine Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The Oregon product excelled on Thursday with two of the other top players at his position sitting out.

The Green Bay Packers aren’t going to move on from Aaron Rodgers in the immediate future, but the team does seem willing to invest in a quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft if the right value comes along. With that in mind, it is worth keeping an eye on the QBs in this year’s class, even despite the possibility that as many as five could be off the board before the 30th overall pick.

As part of the first group of players to do on-field work in Indy at this year’s Combine, the quarterbacks went on display Thursday evening. Of the players who did participate in drills, Justin Herbert from Oregon had one of the best days overall. Herbert tested great, running a 4.68-second 40 with position-best numbers of 35.5 in the vertical jump and 7.06 seconds in the 3-cone drill. Jalen Hurts from Oklahoma did well also, though he did not perform in agility testing.

In throwing drills, however, Herbert was far and away the best quarterback in the first group of passers, as the group was split up in two sessions. He looked effortless and consistently accurate delivering deep throws, while other players in the first group either had not enough arm strength (Jake Fromm in particular) or were less perfect with their ball placement (Brian Lewerke, for example). The second group saw Jordan Love look good, as he auditioned for a top-15 pick. FIU quarterback James Morgan — an Ashwaubenon native — had a good evening throwing the ball as well.

Of course, the star power at the position was diminished somewhat by two of the top passers not participating in drills. Projected #1 overall pick Joe Burrow did not throw, choosing instead to wait until Pro Day, while Alabama’s Tua Tagavailoa is not yet cleared for on-field work after his hip injury late in the 2019 season.

Here are the numbers for the quarterbacks from Thursday night.
