Does Jaguars defensive end Yannick Ngakoue have an announcement to make Monday?

The Jaguars and Yannick Ngakoue have yet to come to terms on a new contract, and it might take a while longer.

Does Jaguars defensive end Yannick Ngakoue have an announcement to make on Monday?

According to the impending free agent’s twitter account, he just may. On Friday, Ngakoue tweeted out “PSA Monday. Stay tuned.” Ngakoue included a checkered flag indicating a victory lap — the same emoji he’s used since the end of the season while speaking on social media about his play.

While the announcement could be regarding anything, it is worth noting the Jaguars have yet to come to terms on a new deal with the franchise defensive end. As one of the best pass-rushers in franchise history, it appears the team and Ngakoue do not quite agree on his worth.

According to a report from ESPN’s Mike DiRocco last week, Ngakoue has been seeking a contract worth around $22M per season. Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell told members of the media on Tuesday he will speak about the negotiations when the team has something to announce, out of respect to Ngakoue himself.

This week, Caldwell sat down with Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio and Chris Simms and talked about the on-going contract situation with Ngakoue.

“I think, knowing our owner and our organization — he’ll draw a sand in the line too so you try to do what’s best for the team obviously first and then what’s best for the player,” Caldwell told Pro Football Talk when asked about player’s taking back control over their contract situations.

The Jaguars are no strangers to disgruntled players, whether over money or otherwise. Over the past three years, Jacksonville lost Los Angeles Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey to a trade he forced on the team, and Chicago Bears wide receiver Allen Robinson either unhappiness or contract negotiation impasses. The Jaguars could lose Ngakoue in a similar fashion if something is not resolved, however the team’s general manager reiterated he does not want to let him go.

“The player has rights, team has rights. We didn’t negotiate — at least I didn’t negotiate the rules of the franchise tag or the transition tag and all that stuff,” Caldwell continued. “So, we’ll use everything in our power to keep Yannick [Ngakoue] here and hopefully it’s on a long-term deal and if it’s not it would be for a year on a franchise tag.”

It appears the Jaguars will not let Ngakoue go easily. The team will have the cap space, thanks to a couple of moves, to franchise tag Ngakoue, locking him with the team for one year. Caldwell alluded to a second franchise tag being placed on Ngakoue next season if his contract remains unsettled and the CBA allows it.

“We’ll address that when that time comes, but we think the world of him.”
