Dwayne is the man
The Redskins Charitable Foundation had their Qatar National Day of Sport which was held in conjunction with D.C. United, the Washington Spirit, and the Embassy of Qatar. Redskins QB Dwayne Haskins Jr. and Vice President of Player Development Doug Williams were there and provided a lot of insight into Haskins mindset going into his first season under new Head Coach Ron Rivera.
Haskins has had plenty of doubts cast on his commitment to the sport, and his coaches in Washington haven’t crowned him as the guy when given the chance. He was reportedly the choice of owner Dan Snyder when he dropped to the 15th pick in last year’s draft, with the scouts wanting to go another direction. Haskins got his chance to start later in his rookie year, and showed enough improvement week-to-week to give hope to most doubters. But it’s a new year and a new regime.
Ron Rivera is definitely not going to hand Haskins the keys without making him work for it. He has mentioned veteran QBs for competition and even brought up the very unlikely scenario where Alex Smith recovers from his life-threatening leg injury to compete for the starting job. The reality is that unless Haskins completely bombs his audition, or Rivera throws a curveball and makes a play for a starting level QB in free agency, Haskins is the Redskins starting QB going forward.
Here is what Williams had to say about Haskins today:
“I think that’s what Dwayne has to do to show them, ‘I’m here, I’m the leader, this is my team, I’m the starter, and I’m going to show you why I’m going to be the starter,’ ”
“Lets be fair; the new coaching staff knows at this point Dwayne Haskins is the starting quarterback,” Williams continued. “The only thing that can happen here is Dwayne has to give it back to them. So it’s up to him to go out there and work in this offseason and learn the playbook and get the coaches and sit down and wear the coaches out. He’s got to stay at the facility until they run him out of the building.”
“Dwayne has a long way to go,” Doug Williams, the Redskins’ senior vice president of player development, told reporters at a community event Friday. “But like I told him, he was doing what we expected him to do. He was ascending. Hopefully the way he goes now, he keeps going up. All eyes are going to be on him. At the same time you’ve got a new coaching staff and they’re not married to him. ... He’s got the ability to do what any coach wants him to do.”
”Dwayne didn’t have the opportunity last year where the coaches put their arms around him,” said Williams, who had been the senior vice president of player personnel the past two years. “He’s got to know we want you to be good. With the new staff coming in, and what he did towards the end of the year, he’s going to give this new staff an opportunity to say, ‘Hey, we need to work with this kid to get the best out of him.’”
Haskins spoke about meeting with Ron Rivera, competing for the starting job, and improving his game going into year 2:
“That’s cool,” Haskins said. “I’m just going to have to work hard and eventually take it over. Just do your best to be accountable for what you have to do and be ready to go.”
Haskins said he took a few days off after the season to rest his body and started football workouts only a few days ago. In addition to meeting with Rivera and new offensive coordinator Scott Turner, he has been in contact with the team’s wide receivers and wants to take the group on a short bonding vacation — an idea he picked up from Tom Brady.
“Just master the playbook as much as I can; getting bigger, faster, stronger; and just getting with my teammates and working on some routes with my receivers and getting ready for the season,” Haskins said when asked his plans for the coming weeks before the Redskins’ offseason workouts begin.
“I’m excited talking to him, talking to Scott [Turner],” he said. “I’m excited to actually do football things with those guys and I feel like we’re going to do a lot of great things together.”
