With only one team getting a bye

It would appear that there’s a big change on the horizon for the National Football League playoffs, and we will see that change starting with the 2020 NFL season.

According to numerous reports on social media, the NFL is leaning heavily towards expanding the playoff field in each conference to seven teams, meaning that only the top seed in each conference would end up with a bye.

Going off of this report from CBS Sports, the NFLPA is willing to go along with this change, as well as the addition of a 17th regular season game in exchange for some concessions from NFL owners, such as shortening the preseason (from four games to three) and other things.

While the change to the postseason format would happen with the upcoming season, the addition of the 17th regular season game would not happen until 2021 at the earliest.

All of these things are part of the negotiations for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. The current agreement is set to expire following the 2020 season, and anyone that remembers the last labor disagreement between the players and the owners would very much like to see both sides come to an agreement before something that bad happens again.

There’s no word on how that 17th regular season game would be determined, though it could be used as a part of the NFL’s desire to have more “international” games. Hopefully there’s some clarification on that coming here in the near future.

What do you think of this potential change to the NFL playoffs, folks?
