The NFL world has grown quite-accustomed to the Dallas Cowboys having one of the better offensive lines throughout football. At this point it is simply what they do.
Dallas has plenty of homegrown players protecting their quarterback. Four of their current five starters were drafted by the team, and the lone one that wasn’t, La’el Collins, was someone that they were able to sign in somewhat unusual circumstances.
It is one thing to have a quality offensive line, it is another thing to have quality offensive line depth. Dallas is seemingly prepared for some things with Brandon Knight and Connor McGovern entering their second years with the team, the latter hasn’t played a game so far, but as is always true the more the merrier.
As noted, the Cowboys have typically brought in offensive linemen by way of the NFL Draft but it seems as if a former friend of theirs could be an option in free agency. Who wants to see Ron Leary return to Dallas?
Ron Leary is set to become a free agent later this month
On Wednesday, it was reported that the Denver Broncos, the team Leary left the Cowboys for, are not planning on picking up Leary’s option and that he will become a free agent as a result. He is suddenly going to be looking for a new team.
Leary never played all 16 games with the Broncos through three years, but he’s coming off of playing 12 in 2019 which is the most that he ever did with them. Obviously Denver is in a bit of a different place as a franchise than the Cowboys, but Leary is still a potential option for his former team.
Leary finished 2019 as PFF’s 54th ranked guard, but he graded best in pass blocking. That is certainly a valuable trait.
When he left the Cowboys in 2017, Leary signed a four-year deal with the Broncos worth $36M ($20M guaranteed). Obviously he’s going to have to take a rate lower than that wherever he is ultimately playing in 2020, but it’s not like the Cowboys have a ton of cap space available for a rotational player at best at the moment.
It would certainly be great to see a reunion between the Cowboys and Ron Leary, but considering that they don’t have a great positional need at guard and that it will likely take something at least somewhat interesting from a financial standpoint to land him, it doesn’t appear as if it is in the cards. Obviously anything is possible, all the best to Leary wherever he ends up.
