The Carolina Panthers made a move to bolster their defensive line depth today.
After announcing the trade of offensive guard Trai Turner for offensive tackle Russel Okung, the Panthers announced another transaction, signing former Cleveland Browns defensive lineman Chris Smith.
Former Browns’ DL Chris Smith is signing a 1-year deal with his hometown team, the Panthers, per source. Good for him. Smith's girlfriend and the mother of one of his children was killed in September after being struck by a passing car after exiting Smith's car.

The Panthers visited with Smith earlier this week, and decided to pull the trigger. Smith will come to Carolina on a 1 year deal as the team works to rebuild its defense, which struggled along the front seven in 2019.
The Panthers front seven is currently in a state of flux, with Mario Addison, Gerald McCoy, Vernon Butler, Kyle Love, and Bruce Irvin among other names that currently appear slated to be free agents. The current plans for the Panthers defensive line point to a more fluid situation than in years past, as the coaches haven’t committed to being a strict 4-3 or 3-4 front. They need to load up the barracks in free agency and the draft to try and give this unit a face lift.
