Auburn TE/WR Sal Cannella has heard from Bengals

NCAA Football: Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game-Auburn at Washington Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

C.J. Uzomah 2.0?

While much of the offseason focus has been on quarterback, offensive linemen and linebacker, the Bengals could have a significant need at the tight end position.

While Tyler Eifert enjoyed a bit of a resurgence in 2020, he’s slated to become a free agent, and it’s untelling if he’ll be re-signed by the Bengals. If he leaves, then the Bengals are left with the enigmatic C.J. Uzomah, as well as an unproven Drew Sample, even if he was a second-round reach pick in 2019.

If Eifert leaves, I’d look for the Bengals to draft another tight end on Day 3 of the draft and/or sign another in undrafted free agency.

Enter Sal Cannella, who reportedly has heard from the Bengals.

Don’t expect Cannella to hear his name called on Draft Day, as the Auburn wide receiver-turned tight end finished last year with 10 catches for 188 yards and two touchdowns. He caught 12 passes for 111 yards and three scores in 2018.

If you’re thinking that sounds familiar, it’s because Uzomah entered the NFL with essentially the same profile as an Auburn tight end who was used more like a receiver, yet still did very little in college, but the Bengals invested a fifth-round pick in him. And to be fair, Uzomah been a pretty solid player for a fifth-round pick, especially in a 2015 draft class that was a complete disaster outside of him turning into a nice late-round value pick.
