The pass rushing stats may surprise you!
Because the Vegas Raiders can boast two young potential cornerstones on the edges of their defensive line, and there are much more glaring needs on both offense and defense, outside pass rushers like Jadeveon Clowney and Shaq Barrett haven’t often been discussed as potential free agent targets for Mike Mayock and Jon Gruden. However, a look at the actual opportunities for putting pressure on the quarterback against how often they actually did put pressure on the quarterback does highlight that maybe Maxx Crosby and Clelin Ferrell could use help more than we know.
ESPN Sports Analytics Writer Seth Walder tweeted out some charts at the end of the year highlighting which edge rushers had the best and worst pass rush win rate and how often those same players drew a double-team from the opposing offense.
Free agent Robert Quinn stood practically alone in terms of pass rush win rate — how often he beats the guy who is blocking him — and he also drew a double-team on more than 22% of his pass rush opportunities. Clowney and Za’Darius Smith were double-teamed more than 26% of the time and had above average PRWR numbers too, though Clowney rarely finished any sack opportunities.
Then there’s Crosby.

In spite of the fact that he was a mid-round rookie, Crosby was double-teamed at a higher rate than players like Myles Garrett, Demarcus Lawrence, Joey Bosa, and Khalil Mack. The less fortunate news is that he had the lowest PRWR of anyone on the chart. The better news is that Crosby still had 10 sacks and was only 22. The future is bright.
Double-teamed at virtually the same rate as Joey Bosa and more often than Mack, Nick Bosa, Yannick Ngakoue, Barrett, and others, Clelin Ferrell also had a low PRWR. But was also 22 during the season and finished with 4.5 sacks, eight QB hits, and eight tackles for a loss.
You might then be wondering how the help was between Ferrell and Crosby.

Maurice Hurst sits near the middle of the chart. He’s obviously not a standout like Aaron Donald and Chris Jones, but he had a higher PRWR than Dalvin Tomlinson, Jurrell Casey, Cam Heyward, and others. Well below Hurst in PRWR, but with an above average double-team rate, was teammate Johnathan Hankins.
Vegas hasn’t been mentioned a lot in terms of the pass rushers as the media and fans instead focus talks on quarterbacks, receivers, and defenders at almost any other position, but it’s not as though Crosby, Ferrell, and the 24-year-old Hurst are necessarily blocking the opportunity to add another pass rusher. Especially since Crosby and Ferrell’s ceiling could be higher than we already thought it was if they aren’t the only defensive linemen worth drawing attention.
