For the third year in a row, Lewis signs a one-year deal with the Packers.

Marcedes Lewis’ last two years in Green Bay have been very different. In 2018, Lewis signed a one-year contract with the Green Bay Packers after spending his first 12 years in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was little-used by head coach Mike McCarthy, playing just 18 percent of the team’s offensive snaps and receiving just four pass targets all season.

Lewis re-upped for a second year in 2019, coming back under new head coach Matt LaFleur. The new coaching staff put Lewis to use much more, as he was on the field for almost 500 offensive snaps, nearly 45 percent of the team’s total, and saw 19 targets in the passing game.

Now, Lewis is returning to Green Bay for a third year. According to ESPN’s Field Yates, Lewis is signing another one-year contract with the Packers for a deal worth $2.25 million. This represents a slight bump in compensation, as Lewis’ previous two contracts were identical $2.1 million deals.

The continuity that Lewis’ presence will provide should be invaluable to the Packers in 2020 as the tight end group goes through a bit of a youth movement. The team cut Jimmy Graham in recent days, and Lewis’ signing will put him in a group with three youngsters: Jace Sternberger, Robert Tonyan, and Evan Baylis. By far the most accomplished blocker at the position, Lewis should be in a position to play significant snaps once again in the upcoming season, with Sternberger likely growing into a much bigger role in his second season.

Stay tuned for more free agency updates throughout this week and moving forward.
