Slay fans, look away.
On Thursday night, news broke that the Detroit Lions are signing former Falcons cornerback Desmond Trufant. Here’s how Lions cornerback Darius Slay responded:
Congrats to my guy!!!! Hope that speeds up my trade process!! https://t.co/ZQHO3NCGuE

They need to hurry it up ♂️ https://t.co/z9crydi2yG

Whether Slay is indicating he wants out or just cracking wise—as he’s known to do—it’s pretty clear where this whole thing is headed. He believes he’s played his last game with the Lions.
The three-time Pro Bowl cornerback has been seeking an extension since the beginning of last offseason. The Lions didn’t seem too keen on it, and when his demands appeared to be in the $16-17 million range this year, there was no indication the Lions even met him at the bargaining table. At the NFL Combine, general manager Bob Quinn admitted the Lions were deliberating all options with Slay—including a trade—which is a rare display of openness from the Lions front office.
There is obviously still a chance that Detroit holds onto Slay for the remaining year in his contract, but the walls appear to be closing in. We may be entering the final days—if not hours—in which Slay is still a Detroit Lion.
