Low budget champs: Super Bowl 2020 winning Kansas City Chiefs among thrifty titleholders | USA Today

2. 2019 Kansas City Chiefs

• Payroll: $167.0 million

• Payroll rank: 32 out of 32 teams

The Kansas City Chiefs won their first Super Bowl in 50 years thanks to their core group of young stars. No 2019 NFL team had a lower salary than the Chiefs, at just under $167 million. In the Super Bowl, they beat the top-spending San Francisco 49ers, who had a $221.7 million payroll. Patrick Mahomes, the 2018 NFL MVP, was still on his rookie contract, adding less than $5 million to Kansas City’s salary cap expenditure. Receivers Mecole Hardman and Tyreek Hill both made the Pro Bowl – Hardman was on a rookie deal that paid him just under $1 million, and Hill just signed a back loaded extension that paid him just over $2 million for 2019. All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu’s contract was also back loaded, so his 2019 salary on the books was just under $6 million. Pro Bowl defensive end Chris Jones was in the final year of his rookie deal that paid him just under $2 million. He will earn over $16 million in 2020.

Every NFL Team’s Worst 1st-Round Draft Pick of the Past Decade | Bleacher Report

Kansas City Chiefs: WR Jonathan Baldwin

Draft Status: 2011, No. 26 Overall

Among the Kansas City Chiefs’ first-rounders in the 2010s, Jonathan Baldwin had the shortest tenure. He only spent two seasons with the club, logging 44 receptions for 607 yards and two touchdowns, with a 41.4 percent catch rate.

Baldwin didn’t play with a high-end group of quarterbacks. Matt Cassel, Kyle Orton, Tyler Palko and Brady Quinn commanded the huddle during the wide receiver’s time with the team in 2011 and 2012.

Yet, during the 2013 offseason, the Chiefs traded Baldwin to the San Francisco 49ers for wideout A.J. Jenkins, who also needed a change of scenery to shed the bust label.

Baldwin caught three passes for 28 yards in seven outings with the 49ers. San Francisco waived him in August 2014. The Detroit Lions picked him up but released him because he failed a physical. The wide receiver didn’t resurface.

Baldwin’s short run with the Chiefs and brief NFL career separate him from Kansas City’s other first-rounders since 2010, which is a stellar group to begin with.

Sources: President Donald Trump says NFL season should start on time | ESPN

“I want fans back in the arenas,” Trump said later in a briefing at the White House. “I think it’s ... whenever we’re ready. As soon as we can, obviously. And the fans want to be back, too. They want to see basketball and baseball and football and hockey. They want to see their sports. They want to go out onto the golf courses and breathe nice, clean, beautiful fresh air.”

2. Texans sign WR Randall Cobb

The move: Houston signs Cobb to a three-year, $27 million deal

Cobb had a sort of career renaissance in Dallas in 2019, but he also benefited from playing in one of the NFL’s top offenses, alongside talents like Amari Cooper and Ezekiel Elliott. As a soon-to-be 30-year-old slot WR who hasn’t played a full season in four years, he never warranted a $9M annual salary, especially in a market that saw Nelson Agholor, a younger, quicker slot target, get barely more than $1M with the Raiders. Worst of all, he’s now under an insane amount of pressure because of the WR he’s replacing ...

Legendary Saints kicker Tom Dempsey dies at 73 | NFL.com

It wasn’t until 1984 that another NFL kicker even converted from 60 yards.

Now, Dempsey has been eclipsed by the BroncosMatt Prater in 2013 (64 yards) and thrice tied by others.

Still, that kick all those decades ago lives on, fluttering through the Tulane Stadium air, broadcaster Al Wester’s call carrying it along.

”Dempsey kicks,” Wester bellowed. “It’s on the way ... it is ... good! It’s good! It’s good! The Saints have won! The Saints have won! The Saints have won! The stadium is wild. Dempsey is being mobbed. The time has run out, the Saints have won, 19 to 17. Dempsey with a 63-yard field goal. The longest field goal in the history of the national league!”

Antonio Hamilton has wanted to play for the Chiefs for a long time

“If you haven’t just been around that stadium when the fans start cheering, after they say ‘the Home of the,’ and they say the ‘Chiefs,’ my ears were about to pop on the sideline. I had never experience that before until I actually was going to Arrowhead Stadium, so I was like, ‘Man, that’s crazy.’ It’s got to be crazier to even be on that team and hear them cheer like that for you.

“It will be a great opportunity to play in front of those guys, so I’m excited for it.”
