The Denver Broncos were interested in Edge Rusher Aldon Smith before he signed with the Dallas Cowboys. Could that mean they are in the market for on in the 2020 NFL Draft?
Some surprising news last week came when Mike Klis of 9News noted that the Denver Broncos had extended an offer to Aldon Smith. He opted to sign with the Dallas Cowboys, but the move to make an offer might just be a sign Denver is looking for more depth at the edge position.
The Broncos made a vet-minimum/incentive-laden offer to Smith, although it fell well short of the deal he got from the Cowboys. Given Smith’s checkered past, his agent Ron Slavin did well to get a one-year, $2 million contract from Dallas with the chance to make another $2 million in incentives.
Smith, 30, has been out of the league since 2015 and is sober and attempting to resurrect what was once a very promising career. He actually led Von Miller in sacks up until 2013 as both came into the league the same year, but the two players’ careers went in very different directions from there.
If the Broncos are looking at depth at edge, then they’ll likely need to look to the 2020 NFL Draft for that. Denver has found many diamonds in the late and undrafted portion of these classes, so perhaps this offer was more about Vic Fangio knowing how good Smith is and attempting to give the guy another chance in the NFL.
