Golden Nuggets: Ranking the best 49ers’ best late-round picks

We all know who is No. 1 on the list.

We are just 10 days away from the 2020 NFL Draft and with the San Francisco 49ers recent success with late-round gems, we are hoping general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan can find another impact player or two in the later rounds.

Ali Thanawalla of NBC Sports put together his list of the Niners’ best picks from the lower rounds since 2000.

This was his top-10:

10) LB Dre Greenlaw - Fifth-round pick in 2019 (No. 148 overall)

9) RT Trent Brown - Seventh-round pick in 2015 (No. 244 overall)

8) C Daniel Kilgore - Fifth-round pick in 2011 (No. 163 overall)

7) TE Eric Johnson - Seventh-round pick in 2001 (No. 224 overall)

6) DE Parys Haralson - Fifth-round pick in 2006 (No. 140 overall)

5) G/C Eric Heitmann - Seventh-round pick in 2002 (No. 239 overall)

4) LS Brian Jennings - Seventh-round pick in 2000 (No. 230 overall)

3) TE Delaine Walker - Sixth-round pick in 2006 (No. 175 overall)

2) P Andy Lee - Sixth-round pick in 2004 (No. 188 overall)

1) TE George Kittle - Fifth-round pick in 2017 (No. 146 overall)

There is no surprise that Kittle tops the list. The guy is just simply a beast and the best tight end in the league who is due for a huge extension.

Lee was like a cult hero for many of us. When he was with the team, we knew the punting aspect of special teams was going to be top-notch. Something we couldn’t say with Bradley Pinion.

As Thanawalla points out, Jennings and Heitmann provided tremendous value to the organization for where they were drafted. It isn’t often you get 13 seasons out of a seventh-round pick, like Jennings gave the Niners.

Greenlaw will climb the list as well. He had a major impact as a rookie and we all have to thank him for the last-second stop against the Seahawks. The “Clinch by an Inch” still puts a smile on my face.

How would you rank the Niners’ late-round picks? Is there someone missing on the list that you think should have made the cut?
