The Linc - Carson Wentz goes 10th in quarterback-only draft

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 5/11/20.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...

What if the NFL had a quarterback-only draft today? - SB Nation
10. Cleveland Browns: Carson Wentz (27 years old). Here’s where things get difficult. There’s a host of good, not yet great, young-ish quarterbacks and heady veterans who make up the next tier. I opted for Wentz — the quarterback the Browns traded back from possibly drafting in 2017. He arrives carrying the hope Cleveland’s massive upgrade at wideout (and to a lesser extent, tight end) will unlock the player who threw 54 touchdown passes against just 14 interceptions in 2017 and 2018. This could be my dumbest selection of the day, seeing as the Eagles may have drafted his replacement last week and have appeared very stupid doing so. [BLG Note: The Eagles end up with Derek Carr at No. 21.]

Eagles Rookie Profile: 6 things to know about John Hightower - BGN
Leaning on the strength of his aforementioned track background, John has a whole lot of speed. He finished 4th in the 400 meter hurdles at the 2016 NJCAA National Championships. His combine 40 time was a solid 4.43, but that was with an extra 15 lbs of muscle he packed on between the end of the 2019 season and the combine. It wouldn’t shock me if he could actually clock a better time once his body adjusts a bit to the added mass. An additional strength of his is elusiveness in the open field and setting up blocks, especially for someone of his length at 6’2”. See: The first play in this highlight reel of an 88 yard TD run.

Concerns about Jason Peters and more in Roob’s 10 Observations - NBCSP
There’s no doubt Jason Peters is a better left tackle today than Andre Dillard. That’s not open for debate. But bringing Peters raises more questions than it answers. Could he get you through 2020? Probably. At least most of it. But he is 38 and going into his 18th season and even J.P. can’t play forever. Dillard played OK in three starts at left tackle last year, but the right tackle debacle certainly raised questions about his make-up. The Eagles have to consider what affect it will have on Dillard if J.P. is here. If Peters starts out as a backup, how will Dillard handle a Hall of Famer lurking in the shadows? If Peters opens the season as the starter, then the Eagles have essentially given up on a 1st-round pick after just three starts. Dillard is 25 years old and only signed through 2022. If the Eagles bring Peters back, it sure points to one thing: The Eagles have no faith in a player they traded up for in the first round just 12 months ago.

A too-early look at what positions are strong in the 2021 NFL Draft - PhillyVoice
Wide receiver: The Eagles just selected three receivers in the 2020 NFL Draft, including Jalen Reagor in the first round, and yet, it wouldn’t be a stretch at all for them to take another receiver in the first round of the 2021 draft. Alshon Jeffery is extremely likely to be gone by then, DeSean Jackson could be a cap casualty, and who knows what J.J. Arcega-Whiteside will show in 2020.

Eagles’ Rodney McLeod talks mental health, Jalen Hurts and leadership - ESPN
Does it feel like your community outreach is increasing? I know you and Jenkins worked together on a lot of things. Do you feel like you’re pushing into more of a leadership role as Malcolm moves onto New Orleans? Yeah. I think I have to in a sense. We have other guys on the team that do an amazing job in the community — Carson [Wentz], Zach Ertz, Brandon Graham, Connor Barwin — and Malcolm, he took on so much, not just on the field but for this city — and I feel like that’s why he’s loved so much, because of the dedication he had and the overall impact he had. Of course he will be missed dearly. I know he will continue to work regardless of whether he’s here or not. But yes, I am now stepping into a bigger role as being a community leader, and this is the first step in starting our foundation to be able to help a lot of our people out. I’m excited for the opportunity.

Football in the Fall? Dr. Fauci: ‘The Virus Will Make Decision For Us’ - FMIA
“So, practically speaking, the success or failure, the ability or not, to actually have a football season is going to depend on just on what I said . . . but what I’m really saying is it’s unpredictable depending upon how we respond in the fall.” [...] Fauci said the NFL hasn’t reached out to talk to him. But if Roger Goodell or chief medical officer Allen Sills did, Fauci said he’d say much of what he said here. And this, about sports in the United States this fall and winter: “It is uncertain. You’ll have to play it by ear according to the level of infection in the community.”

What would it take for Dak Prescott to not be the quarterback of the future for the Dallas Cowboys? - Blogging The Boys
Instead, what is more likely to happen in this type of standoff is that we would see Prescott begrudgingly sign the tag, and once again be playing in a contract year. The table would be set for him to have a huge season with so many great weapons around him, ultimately costing the Cowboys even more money to keep him. If Stephen Jones isn’t budging, this could lead to one giant mess. This Cowboys team is set up so well for the future where the only thing that could mess it up is if the team puts themselves in a situation where they become one of the “have nots” when it comes to the quarterback position. Just like his father before him, does Stephen think he can outsmart the system and produce a winning football team his own way?

Is Morgan Moses about to be replaced as the starting right tackle? - Hogs Haven
But the overall picture that I get from this review is that Cornelius Lucas isn’t any worse at playing right tackle than is Morgan Moses — and probably better. Both Moses and Lucas entered the NFL in 2014. Moses was a third-round pick of the Redskins, while Lucas went undrafted, but do we want to fall into the trap of using draft status to pigeonhole a player seven years after the fact? It’s absolutely true that Morgan Moses has had the more successful career, but the question isn’t what happened from 2014-2019, but what is going to happen in 2020.
