Jeffery suffered a season-ending Lisfranc foot injury on Dec. 9. While the Eagles have been reluctant to give a timetable on his return, sources close to the receiver said he was as far out as nine months from a full recovery from surgery, which theoretically could have him back in uniform by Week 1. The Eagles would love to trade Jeffery. They tried as far back as last October before anonymous quotes criticizing Carson Wentz, the offense and the front office were attributed to him. But he is virtually untradeable considering his contract, age, relative decline, and mostly, his injury. The Eagles could release him at any time and spread out the dead money against the salary cap (approximately $26 million) into next year, but there really isn’t an impetus right now if they hope to accrue something in return for the 30-year old. Maybe they envision working Jeffery back into the fold once healthy. He wasn’t happy last season when he found out about the possible trade, and whether that had anything to do with his alleged comments to ESPN, I still can’t imagine him playing in midnight green again. But a lot could depend on how Jackson returns from November core muscle surgery, how Arcega-Whiteside develops in Year 2, and how the new pieces fit. The Eagles simply aren’t in a position to be dumping (former) Pro Bowl receivers, however distant they are from their best seasons, and from the starting quarterback.

The same is not true of McCoy, who certainly isn’t the loose Shady McCoy of Eagles lore, but remains a better athlete despite being a few years older than Freeman. McCoy generated an explosive (10+ yard) run on 11.9% of his carries last season, largely because of his superior athletic ability to Freeman (8.2% of his runs) at this stage of his career. Of course, McCoy also had the benefit of a better offensive line, and more space in his scheme as well. The reality of the running back room in Kansas City was that many backs could create explosive plays against light boxes and on RPOs, and younger players like Darwin Thompson and Damien Williams warranted more touches accordingly. McCoy was indeed a healthy scratch for the playoffs, but when he played, produced as he was asked to.

In short, I would set the Eagles’ over-under at two compensatory picks. They will very likely get a 6 for the loss of Howard, but then it gets murky. They could get either a 6 or a 7 for Jernigan, or a 7 for Darby, depending on whether or not Jernigan counts or not. If Jernigan doesn’t count, the Eagles will be rooting for Darby to stick with Washington and play enough snaps to maintain his positioning on the list.

Good on Carson for speaking up. There isn’t much to be gained from that, but it was the right thing to do. So many athletes are calculating, careful to guard their “brand”. Will I lose my marketability if I speak up?

RB LeSean McCoy. Proposed team: Philadelphia EaglesProjected contract: 1 year, $1 million. Shady should be even more affordable than Freeman after even old pal Andy Reid opted not to utilize him in the Super Bowl, and common sense says he’ll strongly consider a discount to return to Philadelphia, which he’s publicly called his true NFL home for years. The Eagles don’t really need him, with Miles Sanders set in stone as the lead back, but owner Jeffrey Lurie has long been a McCoy advocate, and Doug Pederson worked with him before. Howie Roseman also a.) has a penchant for nostalgic moves, and b.) is very clearly interested in veteran insurance at the position. The reunion continues to appear more inevitable.

Marcus Mewborn asks: Are there any lingering free agents you could see the Giants trying to nab during the off-season that could fill a need for this team? Ed says: Marcus, there are a couple. Obviously, the Giants have placed the free agent tender on Markus Golden. It would be a nice addition if Golden doesn’t find a suitor and ends up having to sign the tender. Golden has until July 22 to find a new team or his rights revert solely to the Giants. If they want a veteran center I like the idea of bringing in Justin Britt. I’m not sure about his health or the health of Jon Halapio right now, but Britt has had a more successful career. I also still wouldn’t mind seeing a veteran cornerback like Logan Ryan or Darqueze Dennard added to the secondary. Perhaps that depends on what happens with DeAndre Baker.
