It has been a tough year for the “stick to sports crowd” with everything that is happening in our lives and how it’s impacted sports and athletes everywhere. More than ever, athletes are speaking out about the issues that are going on in the United states.
On Friday, San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred warner joined NFL Network’s Steve Wyche, MJ Acosta, and white house correspondent April Ryan to discuss NASCAR being in the headlines after they announced the banning of the Confederate flag at races and all sponsored events. As with most things, backlash was involved, but there was quite a bit of praise and plenty of shock as the majority felt like this was long overdue.
The video is over five minutes. We’ll share it at the end. Warner called this a huge step and talked about how important the issue was:
Obviously, I don’t know a lot about NASCAR. You mentioned how it is a very big Southern sport. But the fact that they were able to take that leap means that we are creating real change, and we’re starting to do things regardless of the backlash that you’re going to get because, at the end of the day, these changes should be made with zero hesitation.
But the fact that there are people who still do believe the things that they do and their hearts aren’t as open as others, these conversations need to be had— regardless if they’re tough or not, it needs to happen.
