2020 is a harder year than normal for several reasons
The Buffalo Bills’ roster appears to be as deep and established as it has been in two decades. Add on top of that the unconventional COVID-19-influenced offseason and it will be no small accomplishment for an undrafted free agent to make the Bills’ roster in 2020.
However, one UDFA who seems to have a puncher’s chance at making the roster is Trey Adams.
Trey Adams OT (University of Washington)
Adams was a highly thought of and highly projected prospect early in his college career. A powerful tackle with a desirable nasty streak, he was suggested as a future first-round pick while a freshman. However, back-to-back injuries in 2017 and 2018 to his knee and back significantly altered his path. Although Adams played the entire 2019 season for the Huskies, his play lacked the consistency and aggressive power his proponents loved when he was a freshman.
Adams probably has the most easily imagined path to the roster. As a true tackle, the players ahead of him are Dion Dawkins, Cody Ford, Ty Nsekhe, and Darryl Williams. Dawkins isn’t going anywhere, but there are significant questions that will be answered in whatever version of training camp and preseason come to pass.
Ford’s doubters (myself included) worry about his quickness to handle speed rushers as well as overcompensating to make up for his own shortcomings; both of those were on display in 2019. Nsekhe seems to be giving way to father time with consistent knee problems in 2019 despite reliable play when on the field. Darryl Williams is a former all-pro who most recently was poorly utilized out of position and his play suffered mightily for it.
The idea of Adams getting starting time is far-fetched. However, the possibility that some combination of Nsekhe, Williams, and/or Ford disappoint the coaching staff to the extent that a simultaneous good showing from Trey Adams would influence them to keep the young kid over the others isn’t completely bonkers.
Adams doesn’t have an easy go of it, but if he is able to recapture some of his earlier prowess and those ahead of him can’t buck the question marks around them, there exists a path for him to be part of the 2020 Bills.
