While the New England Patriots were consistently among the best teams in the NFL over the last decade, the New York Jets found themselves on the other end of the spectrum repeatedly. In fact, the team picked in the top-10 of the draft four times over the last six years. While one of those four selections did not work out for the team (Leonard Williams), and the jury is still out on two others (Sam Darnold, Quinnen Williams), one has developed into a bona fide player: Jamal Adams.
Selected sixth overall in 2017, the LSU product has become one of the NFL’s better safeties and a beacon of hope for the Jets organization. Adams has appeared in 46 of a possible 48 games so far in his career, and has proven himself a versatile playmaker in New York’s defensive backfield — one that was voted to two Pro Bowls and was named a first-team All-Pro for his play during the 2019 season. In short, Adams has been impressive and one of the better first-round selections in 2017.
Given his recent success, it is not surprising that the 24-year-old is looking for a new contract. The Jets have not given him an extension so far, however, despite him already being eligible to be locked up in the long term. This, in turn, is apparently not sitting well with Adams who has repeatedly voiced his displeasure with the organization over the course of the offseason. On Thursday, this reached a new level: per multiple reports, Adams is asking the Jets to be traded.
The reports are coming in the light of an Instagram comment by the defensive back in which he wrote that “[m]aybe it’s time to move on!” from the Jets.
Via ESPN’s Adam Schefter, seven teams are on Adams’ wish list to be traded to: the Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks — coincidentally seven of the best teams in football right now. The Jets, however, have no intention of trading Adams, according to ESPN New York’s Rich Cimini. Instead, they are reportedly still trying to lock their former first-round investment up in the long term.
For the time being, the Jets are in a more favorable position: they do not have to move Adams as long as he is under contract even though they already entertained offers during last year’s trade deadline. That said, the young safety could force their hand by holding out during training camp and maybe even into the regular season.
No matter what happens, though, the Patriots’ division rivals are in a difficult situation when it comes to their best player — one that is looking to become not just the highest paid player on his team, an honor that currently belongs to linebacker C.J. Mosely, but also the top-earning safety in football.
