Jordan Poyer joined the Buffalo Bills ahead of the 2017 season, and has helped the team reach the playoffs twice since then. But for all the success he and the Bills have had over the last three years, they failed to overcome the AFC East dominators: the New England Patriots and quarterback Tom Brady went a perfect 6-0 against Buffalo since Poyer’s arrival in the division — winning the six games by an average of two touchdowns.
With Brady now gone, however, the door appears to be open for the Bills to finally take over — something Poyer pointed out during a recent interview with NFL Network’s Mike Giardi. The 29-year-old also acknowledged, however, that the future Hall of Famer leaving the division is “bittersweet” for him from a personal perspective: he never was able to beat Brady in eight total tries so far between his stints in Buffalo and Cleveland before that.
“It’s wide open with 12 out of the division. It’s on us in order to take advantage of that,” the Bills’ starting safety said during the interview. “I’d say it is bittersweet having Tom out of the division just because I had never beaten Tom. I think I’m like 0-9 against Tom, so I definitely wanted to get a W in that column. But it’s a great opportunity for us to seize, and we have the pieces — just continue to work and trust the process.”
Poyer could have a chance to square off with Brady in the future, though, even in case the Buffalo and Brady’s new team don’t meet in the Super Bowl one day: the Bills and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are scheduled to face off during the 2021 regular season, the final year of Brady’s current contract.
