Guard will be a Raider this season
Mike Mayock wasn’t lying to us when he said Gabe Jackson will be the Las Vegas Raiders’ starting guard back on April 25.
When the NFL business day ended at 1 p.m. PT on Monday and Jackson was still a Raider, it meant his 2020 $9.6 million salary became guaranteed. The June 1, 2020 date was set in his contract, which he signed in 2017.
As we explained last week, it was likely that the Raiders wouldn’t cut Jackson close to the deadline. But there were hints all offseason that the Raiders were considering moving on from the 20104 third-round pick.
He was reportedly being shopped in trade talks.
Also, the Raiders re-signed veteran guard Denzelle Good and Jordan Devey, and added veteran Eric Kush in free agency. Then, they traded up in the fourth round to draft guard John Simpson of Clemson. With Richie Incognito entrenched at left guard, that’s a lot of guards.
Jackson, who turns 29 next month, didn’t have a great 2019 season and he missed five games due to injury — but he has been an above-average player for most of his career. If Jackson struggles or in injured in 2020, this might be his final season as the Raiders’ right guard.
But it is now official that he is staying with the Raiders this season.
The Raiders have about $8 million remaining in salary-cap room with most of that reserved to sign their seven draft picks.
