How is this possible?
With all of the great players the Minnesota Vikings defense has fielded in recent years, defensive end Danielle Hunter could be on his way to being the best. He’s already the youngest player in NFL history to reach the 50 sack plateau, and he might just be getting to his prime years as a pass rusher.
With all that said. . .is it possible that Hunter is still underrated?
The folks at Pro Football Focus seem to think so, as they’ve named Hunter the most underrated player on the Vikings’ roster.
Here’s what they had to say about him:
Hunter is one of just eight edge defenders to record overall grades of 75.0 or higher on 500 or more snaps in each of the past four seasons, and he took things to an entirely different level in 2019. Hunter’s 89.0 overall grade was one of the best marks at the position, as were his 88 quarterback pressures (second to Za’Darius Smith). If not for sitting out all but one snap in a meaningless Week 17 game against the Chicago Bears, Hunter may have finished the season with the most pressures in the NFL. That kind of performance deserves recognition — he’s in the elite tier of edge defenders, and still at just 25 years old, he’s only improving.
I mean, that doesn’t really sound like an underrated player, but if that’s the criteria that Pro Football Focus wants to use, that’s their call. I just know that every Vikings fan knows who Danielle Hunter is, and there are plenty of quarterbacks around the league that have gotten quite familiar with him, too.
