A big day ahead in the NFL, as the league and NFLPA will try and resolve their differences over player pay for the 2020 season. We’ve got news on that as well as some player profiles and Julio Jones praise in today’s Falcoholinks.

Player profiles: Secondary

We rounded out last week by zeroing in on the player profiles for the Falcons’ revamped secondary. With a mix of new players and young guys looking to take the next step in their career, Atlanta’s defensive backfield comes with question marks.

To address the need for a top corner after parting ways with Desmond Trufant, the Falcons selected Clemson’s A.J. Terrell with their first pick in the draft. He will be a key piece to the cornerback group.

The Falcons will turn to Ricardo Allen as the tested veteran in the secondary, and his leadership should prove invaluable for the younger guys in the unit.

Kendall Sheffield is another young face who the Falcons will be relying on in 2020. The presumptive starting slot corner, Sheffield brings speed to the secondary but will need to improve his coverage ability.

And then there’s Isaiah Oliver who is entering his third NFL season and is looking to take the leap on defense.

Julio Jones Day

July 10th was declared Julio Jones Day in Falconsland, so The Falcoholic made sure to get in on celebrating the NFL’s best wide receiver. We tracked all of the records that Julio ranks top 10 in, and like Julio Jones himself, it’s impressive.

He’s landed at No. 2 on Adnan Ikic’s most important Falcons on offense in 2020, and according to players and personnel around the league, he’s the top wide receiver heading into this season.

Pandemic season

Today is an extremely important day on the NFL calendar, as the NFLPA and the league will discuss the financials of the 2020 season, which are obviously critical to the season being played at all. Reports have shown that both parties are far apart on the issue.

And while the NFL and NFLPA may be at a temporary impasse regarding player pay, the league did take time to ban post-game jersey swaps, even though players will be tackling one another for hours.
