The Hall of Famer says the Niners will need one of their receivers to step up next season.
With Deebo Samuel suffering a Jones fracture during offseason training, there is some uncertainty around the San Francisco 49ers’ wide receivers.
Samuel is expected to be ready sometime before mid-September, but the injury is a tricky one. We all know what happened to Trent Taylor last year.
Training camp is two weeks away, and the Niners are hoping one of their receivers shows that they’re ready to take the next step.
The NFL Network’s LaDainian Tomlinson was asked what is the 49ers’ Achilles’ heel going into the 2020 season, and had this to say:
“We know what Deebo Samuel is. We know that he’s coming off a foot injury, and hopefully he’ll get back healthy, but I’m talking about the other guys. They drafted Jalen Hurd a year ago, and he spent the entire season pretty much injured. Now, he’s the bigger body type of guy that can help them in the red zone, where they struggled a bunch last year. But, I like Brandon Aiyuk. I think it may take him some time to develop considering the climate we’re in with the pandemic, and you can’t get off the field. So, dependent on how quickly Aiyuk adjusts to the offense, this could be the Achilles’ Heal for the 49ers in production out wide. We know Jimmy [Garoppolo] in the past has struggled throwing the football. He needs those guys outside to step up a little bit more for him.”
I am with LT. San Francisco is hoping someone unproven can take over the No. 2 receiver role behind Samuel. Hurd is an interesting option. He reportedly looked great at camp last year before injuring his back. He can be a red zone weapon for Garoppolo with his big body and athletic ability.
Another guy I am counting on is Trent Taylor. The slot receiver looked good with Garoppolo over the last five games of 2017, but we unfortunately haven’t seen the two together on the field for basically all of the last two seasons.
Who do you think is the second receiver on the 49ers’ roster?
On to some links:
History says it is extremely difficult to get back to the Super Bowl for the runner up from the previous season. 49ers Web Zone’s David Bonilla looked back at what happened to the last 10 Super Bowl losers the following season.
Where will Garoppolo be ranked among quarterbacks in Madden 21? NBC Bay Area’s Jessica Kleinschmidt says it’s about time Jimmy G got some respect around.
One receiver who hasn’t lived up to expectations is Dante Pettis. Fansided’s Peter Panacy says the Niners could move Pettis to the Minnesota Vikings.
Who is one former 49er that you think belongs in the Hall of Fame? SI’s Clark Judge says one Niner whose greatness gets forgotten is lineman Randy Cross.
Richie James is out of action with a broken wrist. 49ers team reporter Keiana Martin breaks down how the returning specialists will perform in 2020.
Fred Warner and Kwon Alexander will be manning the middle for the 49ers’ defense again next season. The duo is getting ready for training camp by working out together. Check out the video of the two getting after it. (49ers Web Zone)
