According to NFL.com’s Maurice Jones-Drew, Indianapolis Colts running back Marlon Mack is the NFL’s 17th best rusher among all 32 teams’ RB1’s:
17. Marlon Mack
Indianapolis Colts · Fourth season
2019 stats: 14 games | 247 att | 1,091 rush yds | 4.4 ypc | 8 rush TDs | 14 rec | 82 rec yds | 0 rec TDs
Coming off solid back-to-back seasons, Mack is a home-run hitter playing behind a great offensive line. He should get the call early on, but I can see Mack splitting carries with rookie Jonathan Taylor by Week 6. Staying healthy will be key for the Colts’ fourth-year back.
Behind Indy’s powerful run blocking offensive line, the 2017 fourth round pick of the Colts rushed for 1,091 rushing yards (11th most) on 247 carries (9th most) [4.4 ypc. avg.] and 8 touchdowns (T-9th most) in 14 games [12 starts] this past season. Mack also had 0 fumbles and 67 rushes for first downs (5th most) during 2019.
He was recently ranked one of the NFL’s Top 10 ‘most explosive runners’.
Still only 24 years old and entering a contract year, Mack has a lot of motivation to have a big season for the Colts. However, he may be limited to a platoon among primary carries, as Indianapolis selected 2nd round workhorse Jonathan Taylor early on in this past April’s NFL Draft.
During 2020, the Colts would be smart to keep both of their young bellcows fresh down the stretch by splitting carries and utilizing them both in the ground game. However, Mack needs to have a strong season early on, because he could be at risk of losing the lion’s share of the primary carries to Taylor by midseason—if the rookie has a hot start for Indianapolis.
The heated competition should bring out both of the backs’ best this upcoming season—although each rusher figures to be featured in Indianapolis’ rushing attack regardless.
Mack shouldn’t be written off yet with the Colts—having a lot to prove in 2020. He still figures to have plenty of mileage left in the tank and has been very productive for Indianapolis—even if he’s not necessarily a truly elite NFL running back:
