Foster was a three-year starter at Syracuse.

The San Francisco 49ers are adding some depth to their defense. ESPN’s Adam Schefter says the Niners are signing former Syracuse safety Evan Foster (per Sean Stellato).

Foster started every game for the Orange over the last three seasons, racking up 232 total tackles (nine for a loss), three sacks, and two interceptions. The 22-year-old suffered a torn abductor muscle early in Syracuse’s 2019 campaign, which he believes hurt his chances to be selected at the 2020 NFL Draft.

Syracuse postponed its Pro Day due to the pandemic, so Foster filmed a virtual combine for NFL scouts to evaluate him heading into the draft.

“Foster says he ran a 4.48 40-yard dash, and In addition to his 40 time, which would’ve tied for 12th among defensive backs in the NFL Scouting Combine, Foster said he logged a 37-inch vertical jump and 4.21-second shuttle — both marks that would’ve ranked in the top seven among DBs. Foster also clocked a 7.11-second L-drill.”

Foster is depth signing who could challenge for a special teams role.

NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco says Foster should be on the field for practice tomorrow.
