Bill Parcells offers advice to Giants' Joe Judge: 'Be yourself'

Bill Parcells, one of the true legends in New York Giants history, was nearly one-and-done as a head coach in East Rutherford after posting a record of 3-12-1 in 1983.

Part of the reason, which Parcells immediately came to realize, was that he put too much emphasis on being a stereotypical head coach instead of just being himself.

Parcells now wants first-time head coach Joe Judge to learn from his mistakes.

“I was just trying to be a head coach instead of being Bill Parcells,” he told the New York Post. “[Just] be yourself.”

Unlike some other Giants coaches in the recent past, Judge doesn’t appear to play pretend very frequently. He’s a man who seems comfortable with who he is and how he leads, and by all accounts, that’s gained the respect of his players.

Still, Judge is facing a season unlike any other first-time head coach has ever endured thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. Gone were minicamps, organized team activities and preseason games. In were virtual meetings, distance learning and a very limited number of training camp practices.

“I think it’s very difficult for a first-year head coach,” Parcells said. “And I also think it’s very difficult for first-year coordinators. There’s a lot happening in preseason besides the players. The coaching staff has to get itself organized. Game communication: Who’s where? Who’s doing what? Who’s in charge of substitution? Who’s watching timeouts. Who’s doing this, who’s doing that? They don’t even have a chance to practice that under real game conditions.

“We had 24 practices before our first preseason game. And 50 before our first regular-season game. And these guys are gonna have 14 padded practices before your first regular-season game. I used to have that in 10 days.”

The Giants have substituted intrasquad scrimmages for preseason games, but it’s still not the same thing.

Don’t expect Judge to use that as a crutch, however. He’s made it very clear that there are literally no excuses. And that’s just who Joe Judge is as a person — not a coach — and that should serve him well and make Parcells smile.
