Cleveland Browns Training Camp Recap: Day 6 - Garrett Returns to Drills

The Browns practice in shells the day before an off day.

The start of Thursday’s practice brought some more bad news on the injury front, as we learned that CB Kevin Johnson, the favorite to win the nickelback job, suffered a lacerated kidney during Wednesday’s practice. Yikes! Let’s see what happened on Day 6 of practice.

Cleveland Browns Training Camp Report - Day 6 (8/20/20)

1. A Triumphant Return: While we’ve heard about Browns players going down to injury, it’s good to hear about one coming back — or rather, making his debut for the 2020 season. DE Myles Garrett, who has been out with a hamstring injury, returned to individual drills during practice.

Garrett was not taking part in team drills yet. After three straight days of padded practices, the Browns were in helmets and shells only the day before being off on Friday.

2. Wide Receiver Quickness (Drill of the Day): There are different definitions of athletic, but I consider myself to be a pretty athletic guy from a speed perspective. Would I want to take a big hit in football? Heck no — but I still love running routes, flying and catching the go route, etc. Playing basketball several days a week for the past few years would keep me in shape. With the pandemic, I can bike ride, but it’s not the same in terms of staying sharp with the quickness and other muscles being worked. Long story short, I miss this type of action myself and need to find time to get back to it:

3. Having a Little Fun: Sometimes it’s fun just to lighten the mood at practice with some fun competition, and that’s what happened when DE Porter Gustin and OT Alex Taylor each had the opportunity to field three punts. I don’t know if any stakes were involved, but both players caught all three punts cleanly.

4. Scheduled Rest Day for Jack Conklin: For training camp, I’ve always been a fan of scheduling days off for key veteran players. For one, those guys don’t need to prove themselves every day. Plus, it allows the person on the depth chart behind them to get in some valuable reps. The media was wondering why RT Jack Conklin was missing from practice, but it was confirmed later that he had a scheduled day of rest. OL Chris Hubbard filled in for him at right tackle with the first teamers.

5. Field Goal Updates: Even though K Austin Seibert has been fairly accurate this camp, his misses do still come regularly from beyond 40 yards. With P Jamie Gillan out for a second straight day, QB Case Keenum became the holder. Seibert was 5-of-7 on his field goals, but connected on his 50-yard attempt.

According to head coach Kevin Stefanski, the kicker tryouts the other day had nothing to do with Seibert, and it was just GM Andrew Berry doing his due diligence. If a kicker gets COVID, it’s good to have someone on speeddial.

6. Play of the Day: The offense had some more fluid play on Thursday. The highlight of the day came when QB Baker Mayfield launched a pass downfield to WR Odell Beckham, who caught it amidst double coverage from S Sheldrick Redwine and CB Donovan Olumba.

7. Brownies: CB Denzel Ward had a 95-yard pick six on QB Case Keenum. ... CB Terrence Mitchell got some work in with the first-team defense. ... With CB Kevin Johnson out, CB M.J. Stewart becomes the nickelback. ... The Browns’ big defenders were working on scooping up fumbles in a drill. ... If you want horrid reminders of Freddie Kitchens last year, then read this tweet from Daryl Ruiter about the offense snapping the ball too often with the play clock down to 00. ... RB Nick Chubb has “been in meetings and not having any problems.” ... A total of 46 puppies have been adopted via the Browns Puppy Pound this year.

8. Next Up: The Browns have an off day on Friday. Their next practice is scheduled for Saturday, August 22, at 2:25 PM.

Aside from that, I want to give props to the Browns, who are giving very good access and coverage to fans via their 2-hour live videos from camp each and every practice.
