Training camp is chugging along, so today’s Falcons news and notes focuses on some camp news. Read on for Monday’s edition of Falcoholinks.
Player profiles
As our deep dive into the Falcons players continues, we’re turning our focus toward the depth pieces on the roster.
Atlanta recently added a much needed veteran presence to their cornerback group, signing former Cincinnati defensive back Darqueze Dennard to a one-year deal. Dennard has a proven track record as an effective CB, and is a welcome addition to a positional group featuring young players.
Guard Justin McCray will be in the mix for a spot along the offensive line — and his versatility will be a benefit as he aims to crack the roster.
Offensive lineman Matt Gono has been with the team for a couple of seasons now, but has only appeared in five games so far. Gono has an interesting opportunity in camp, as the left guard spot is far from decided — he even received first team reps there last week.
From our projections, however, Gono is slated to start the season as the Falcons’ swing tackle.
Stocker signed
The Falcons brought back blocking tight end Luke Stocker to round out the tight end spot, which resulted in the team waiving Carson Meier as a corresponding move. Stocker is a veteran blocker, but doesn’t add much in the way of receiving production.
With the addition of Luke Stocker, we’re beginning to see a clearer picture of the depth chart at the tight end position.
Getting serious
Whereas in past seasons the Falcons seemed content with their existing personnel, this offseason has featured a flurry of signings — both starters and depth, alike. The Falcons continued to make moves by inking cornerback Darqueze Dennard and tight end Luke Stocker, signaling that they will not rest on their laurels depth-wise and plan to have sturdy reinforcements in place to contend in 2020.
Kazee at safety?
Where Damontae Kazee will fit on defense has been a topic of conversation in Falconland this offseason, and the AJC’s D. Orlando Ledbetter reported that the team has been giving Kazee starting reps at free safety.
Does this mean we could see Damontae Kazee alongside Keanu Neal in the defensive backfield? Quite possible. It could also mean more three-safety sets.
