Related: Patriots announce official 2020 coaching staff ahead of training camp
Before the start of their training camp late last month, the New England Patriots announced their official coaching staff heading towards the 2020 NFL season. Shortly thereafter, they also released the rest of their organizational structure for the upcoming campaign — including some changes to their front office and scouting departments in light of the offseason departure of college scouting director Monti Ossenfort to the Tennessee Titans.
While Ossenfort’s role within the Patriots remains unoccupied for the time being, the team did promote another member of its personnel department: Dave Ziegler, who had served as New England’s director of pro personnel for the previous four seasons, will now work as its assistant director of player personnel. Accordingly, the 43-year-old can now be seen as the right-hand man of Nick Caserio who himself signed a contract extension to stay with the Patriots earlier this year.
How Ziegler’s new role will effectively look like remains to be seen, but it would not be surprising if he took over some of Ossenfort’s former responsibilities within the college scouting department as well: the Patriots, as has been pointed out numerous times in the past, are not necessarily keen on titles and have their staff members wear numerous hats.
Either way, Ziegler does bring plenty of experience to the table after spending eight seasons as a member of the team’s scouting operation: the first three as assistant director of pro scouting, the last four, as noted above, as director of pro personnel. Ziegler, who started his NFL career with the Denver Broncos and was a college teammate of Caserio and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, has a contract through the 2021 draft.
His is not the only new role handed out by the team this year, though.
Eliot Wolf will serve as a scouting consultant in 2020. Before joining the Patriots earlier this offseason, he worked numerous roles: starting his career in the Green Bay Packers’ pro personnel department in 2004, Wolf worked his way up the organization to become director of pro personnel (2012-14), of player personnel (2015), and of football operations (2016-2017). In 2018, he joined the Cleveland Browns as assistant general manager but was let go again earlier this year. Following a short stint in Seattle, he arrived in New England in March.
