Watt for the eighth-highest disruption rate (13.4%) among all front seven players (min. 400 pass-rushing snaps, per Next Gen Stats). Don’t be fooled by Graham’s lack of splashy traditional stats from last year (just 8.5 sacks) or over his entire career (51), for that matter. Trust your eyes. They’ll confirm that he’s one of the best defensive linemen in football. [...] 21) Jason Kelce — Centers might have a limited ceiling in terms of star potential, but it helps if you have a personality. And a brother who is also an elite tight end. Oh, and if you’re really good at playing center. Kelce is a three-time Pro Bowler coming off his third straight first-team All-Pro season, ranking as PFF’s top-graded center, both overall and in run-blocking, in 2019. The Eagles’ offensive line is going through some things, with Jason Peters trying to become the first guard 38 or older to start 16 games in the NFL since Ray Brown did it for Detroit in 2003, and second-year pro Andre Dillard seeking to validate his first-round pedigree at left tackle. Kelce, who has missed just four starts over the past seven seasons, will be the rock in the middle.

JALEN REEVES-MAYBIN. Wait. Who? Believe it or not, this is probably the most intriguing option. And it might not be very realistic considering JRM is under contract with the Detroit Lions and might need to be acquired via trade. But the Lions could be willing to move on from JRM, who is in the final year of his rookie deal. He showed promise in coverage as a rookie but hasn’t proved to be a good fit for Matt Patricia’s defense. JRM only has three starts in 39 games played. JRM fits the mold the Eagles value. And by that I mean the 25-year-old is an undersized and athletic defender with experience as a hybrid linebacker/safety.

The keys this year are multiple. Gerry has to take another step after his improvement in 2019. The Eagles are super high on Edwards, signed after the 2019 draft, and he’ll have an opportunity to earn a starting job. Riley runs well and was a third-round pick of the Falcons whom the Eagles think will make a significant impact now that he knows the defense. For sure, Taylor has to accelerate his learning curve, as does Bradley. Singleton has to prove that he’s more than a special teams player. That is your linebacker landscape, altered in a weird way by the sudden retirement of a player, Jatavis Brown, we never had a chance to know. But, hey, that’s how it’s going to go in the NFL this season. The teams that handle the “weird” the best are going to win. Strange indeed, but true.

As an Eagle [1958]: The Eagles drafted Madden as an offensive lineman out of Cal Poly in the 21st round in 1958, but he tore up his knee during training camp at Hershey and never played football again. Madden only coached the Raiders for 10 years but went 103-32-7 and guided the Raiders to a win over the Vikings in Super Bowl XI at the Rose Bowl. His .759 winning percentage is highest in NFL history by a head coach (minimum 100 games), and the Raiders reached the postseason in eight of his 10 years. Madden was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006, was an NFL color analyst from 1979 through 2008 and lends his name to the popular Madden NFL video games.

The Eagles’ pass defense finished ranked No. 16 across the league (Football Outsiders – DVOA) and considering the injuries that the team suffered throughout the year, that was considered a huge accomplishment for the team. Needing help on the back end, the team selects Holland, an active piece on the third level. Moving Jalen Mills to safety after his constant struggles at corner and only being on a one-year deal, Howie Roseman still decides to take a higher upside player. A true alpha personality, Holland is the type of player that raises the temperature of a room as soon as he steps foot in it. Praised for his smarts, he already has his degree (ethnic studies) in hand prior to starting his junior season and that intelligence carries over to his football IQ on the field. One of the leaders of the Ducks secondary, Holland has experienced most of his playing time as the low safety, which pairs perfectly with the rangy free safety in Rodney McLeod.

This isn’t to nitpick and point out that throws behind the receiver stalled drives forcing them to punt or missing a streaking Tavon Austin wide open down field proved costly. But those things did happen and it’s fair to acknowledge it. It’s also important to understand that some of Prescott’s weaknesses still come into play at times. Dak does a lot of things well. In fact, we listed them for you last month. But there are things he still needs to work on. One of those things is his tendency to chicken out on the money down. Over the past two season, Prescott has the seventh highest checkdown percentage on third downs. For whatever reason, Dak is playing too conservative in these situations. This isn’t something we can blame on Garrett or even Kellen Moore who’s calling the plays. These are in-the-moment decisions from Prescott.

The Washington Football Team announced that Reuben Foster has been activated off of the PUP list, opening the way for him to play football in 2020. Foster injured his knee on his first day on the practice field with the team last year, and missed the entire 2019 season. He had been picked up during the 2019 off-season after being waived by the 49ers following charges of domestic violence which were later dropped due to insufficient evidence.

Barner, 31, would be an immediate contender at the Ravens’ unsettled kick and punt return positions. In 14 games last season for the Atlanta Falcons, he averaged 7.6 yards per punt return, scoring on a 78-yard return, and 23.9 yards per kick return. Ball security, however, was a problem: Barner muffed four punts, losing one fumble. With wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas opting out of the 2020 season, rookie wide receiver James Proche is considered the favorite to start at punt returner. There’s less clarity at kick returner, where running back Justice Hill and wide receivers Chris Moore and Devin Duvernay could be in the mix.

Hector originally signed with Philadelphia as an undrafted free agent out of South Florida in 2018. He appeared in eight games as a rookie, playing 82 snaps in a rotational role. After he was traded to the Cardinals in mid-August 2019, Arizona cut Hector just before the start of the regular season. He eventually landed back with the Eagles, appearing in three games for the club last season.

Although the Commissioner has subtly shifted his vow from playing a full season to playing a complete one, the NFL privately has a high degree of confidence that the 2020 season will be played in full, pandemic notwithstanding. Yes, a hardened bubble in some cities may become necessary, with extended “voluntary” hotel stays by players, coaches, and essential staff (some teams will do it all week, non-stop; some are thinking about a Tuesday-to-Sunday approach), who would remain away from family in order to avoid becoming infected by kids, spouses, or others who may be living with the players, coaches, etc. But it’s believed that, if the spread of the virus can be limited during training camp (there were zero additions to the COVID-19 list on Saturday), it will become easier not harder when the time comes to play games.

But the important thing in 2020 is something else, on the weekend we passed 5 million documented COVID-19 cases as a country. It’s actually whether Houston-Kansas City, and the 268 NFL games after that, will be played. “I believe Week 1 will happen,” J.J. Watt told me the other day. “I’m optimistic.” I think so too. There’s good reason to be optimistic, at least for this season to kick off. The NFL Players Association reported that as of Thursday, 56 players had tested positive for the virus, including pre-camp and daily testing once camp started; the majority of those players returned to their teams, virus-free. But the key, obviously, will be how players handle more post-training-camp freedom once they’re in regular-season mode.
