On the Monday mailbag edition of the AP Laboratory, we were asked for some surprises to make the Chiefs initial 53-man roster.
Here are some names we came up with it...
Tight end Nick Keizer
With Deon Yelder missing time in the backup tight end competition, Keizer seems to be gaining some valuable opportunities to show his value. Keizer has shown more to this point as a blocker than Yelder — a valuable trait in a backup tight end. Yelder has shown flashes of production as a pass-catcher in his career — namely his mini-breakout against the Detroit Lions early in the 2019 season.

Offensive lineman Jackson Barton
Barton was brought over to the Chiefs’ active roster last season from the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad, and Kansas City held onto him all the way through. The 2019 seventh-round pick was on the sideline of the Super Bowl and is now looking to extend his time with the world champions.
There is some uncertainty at the tackle position behind the Eric Fisher (who left Sunday’s practice with a concussion) and Mitchell Schwartz. The first up to replace Fisher in practice was veteran Mike Remmers, whose best football has been at guard. If Barton develops throughout training camp, he could stick on the roster. There are not many true tackle-only profiles on the Chiefs’ roster behind the starters, but Barton might be the best of that bunch.
Safety Rodney Clemons
The undrafted free agent and Lottery Ticket is competing for a spot on one of the thinnest position groups on the Chiefs roster. With Juan Thornhill’s availability at the beginning of the year yet to be determined and unimpressive group competing for the final safety spot, Clemons could find himself on the roster Week 1. Clemons will have to show out on special teams and earn the trust of coordinator Dave Toub. If he can prove enough in the hidden third, beating out Armani Watts is a reasonable expectation for Clemons.
