Many NFL players get their start on the practice squad, and the rules have changed in a post-COVID-19 world. Find out more on BRB.
With your Houston Texans officially cutting their roster down to 53 players this afternoon, our attention shifts to finding out who’ll be on their practice squad. Players across the league who didn’t make the 53-man roster for any number of reasons can still find gainful NFL employment via one of the 320 512 practice squad spots available.
Yes, 512. Thanks to COVID-19, some of the rules have changed for NFL practice squads this year. Those changes include:
- Instead of ten (10) players, practice squads this season can include up to sixteen (16) players.
- Six (6) of those sixteen (16) slots can be used on players regardless of how many years they have in the league.
- Teams can protect up to four (4) practice squad players per week; that means four guys an be designated as not eligible to be signed onto another team’s active roster.
- Salaries for practice squad players are now $8,400.00 for less experienced players and up to $12,000.00 per week for veterans.
- Two (2) practice squad players each week can be elevated to the team’s roster, increasing active rosters from 53 to 55.
- A player elevated from the practice squad to the 55-man roster can be sent back to the practice squad twice without having to clear waivers.

UPDATE: Perhaps our best intentions were befouled by the celebration of Deshaun Watson signing a contract extension that shall keep him ensconced in battle red for the foreseeable future.
