Tyrone Crawford says Cowboys given ’green light’ to protest freely - Calvin Watkins, DMN
In the past, Jerry Jones was not amenable to Cowboys players protesting during the national anthem. This year, there seems to be a new attitude in Dallas.
The day after quarterback Dak Prescott said he would agree for his Cowboys teammates to protest individually during the national anthem, defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford made an even bigger statement.
Crawford said Thursday the Cowboys were given the green light to have any form of protest. Just who gave the Cowboys that green light isn’t known, but team owner and general manager Jerry Jones has said he is open to speaking with players about how they protest.
“We definitely (have) the green light on all that,” Crawford said in a conference call. “But also just trying to find something that’s going to make a boom. It’s not just going to be something that people look at it one time and kind of swipe by it, they’re like ‘Oh that’s great. The Cowboys did that’ and swipe by it. We want to do something that makes a boom and that’s something that people remember and actually creates some change and we’ll figure that out.”
Defensive tackle Dontari Poe is the only Cowboys player who said he would kneel during the national anthem to raise awareness of police brutality against people of color and to stop systemic racism.
Cowboys release safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix after adding him in free agency - Todd Archer, ESPN
The Cowboys let go of one of their big-name free agent additions. It was sort of a surprise, but then again, practice reports had been painting the picture.
The Dallas Cowboys released veteran safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix on Thursday.
In March, the Cowboys signed Clinton-Dix to a one-year, $3.75 million deal that included a $1.25 million signing bonus. The team also guaranteed $1 million of his $2.25 million base salary, but the move frees up $1.5 million in cap room.
Clinton-Dix opened training camp working with the first-team defense but was quickly supplanted by Darian Thompson. Clinton-Dix spent parts of five seasons playing for Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy with the Green Bay Packers before being traded to Washington in 2018. He played last season for the Chicago Bears.

The move creates a need at safety and could spark discussions about veteran Earl Thomas, who was released by the Baltimore Ravens on Aug. 23 for conduct detrimental to the team.
The Cowboys had internal discussions regarding Thomas after his release but had not moved toward signing him.

No Jason Witten means it’s a new era for Cowboys tight ends.
It’s a big year at the tight end spot and we all want to see Blake Jarwin take control and be that guy Prescott can go to in a jam like Jason Witten was for all those years. Jarwin is looking good in camp, but how do you feel about him going forward, as well as the guys behind him? We’ve got some undrafted guys I haven’t heard a whole lot about. — ASA ARREY / OREGON CITY, OR
Nick: Without a doubt, Jarwin is the starter and he’s going to get a lot of looks. But it’ll be up to him to see if he’s going to be a middle-of-the-pack tight end or somebody who is on that next level. With all the weapons around him, you know he’s going to get favorable matchups. But my only worry about him is how well he holds up as a blocker. And if that’s not his thing, then he’ll be used as more of a pass-catching tight end. There are some really good tight ends in the league that don’t block much. It just hurts the team’s versatility and flexibility because you know what they’re going to do when they’re out there. I’m anxious to see what he’s going to do. The rest of the tight ends will have some role but other than Blake Bell, I’m not expecting a lot of action on offense.
Jonny: We became a little accustomed to seeing an older, slower version of Jason Witten the past few years, but I was just thinking about how Cowboys fans will probably never see a tight end like the prime version of Witten they got for about 10 years again. He really might be the best tight end ever. Jarwin simply won’t ever be Witten. But one pattern of Witten’s he can follow is great chemistry with his quarterback. Witten and Tony Romo were two names in the same sentence. Dak Prescott is a phenomenal quarterback. He’ll extend plays and be looking for options when plays break down. Jarwin can have a lot of success just by knowing where his quarterback needs him to be in those moments.

Eisen: The best team in the NFC coming into 2020 is... ?
Collinsworth: I really fell in love with San Francisco last year and I picked them to win the Super Bowl and I was so smug sitting up in the stands just feeling like, I swear, Rich, I never — I was like, “I told everybody this is what was gonna happen.” It’s just one of those you know — I didn’t really say it out loud I just was kind of sitting there going, “you are such a genius,” and then it just all went so south. So I’m still a big fan of the 49ers, I don’t like some of the injuries that they’ve had... and I’m scared to death to even say this but the Dallas Cowboys at least on the offensive side, to me, feel like they are just loaded up.
I love CeeDee Lamb coming out of the draft. I just really did. And Amari Cooper is one of the best one-on-one route runners. [Michael] Gallup’s a really nice player. [Ezekiel] Elliot’s — you know we know what he’s going to be. And [Tony] Pollard is a guy that I think will be a much bigger factor this year in the backup role, maybe as a receiver coming out a little bit of [the backfield].
It depends on how well they do without Travis Frederick there at the center position, but I just feel like that this is a team that really does have a chance. Now how long does it take? They’re the flip side of what we talked about with some of these other teams getting off to a hot start. I don’t think they’ll get off to a great start because they’re a new team new coach, new coordinator on the defensive side with Mike Nolan.
I think it might take a little while but, I see no reason that the Cowboys can’t be really tough coming into [the season].
Crawford: This Group Could Be The Best - Nick Eatman, The Mothership
Tyrone Crawford is fired up about the group the Cowboys have assembled along the defensive line.
The veteran is back and once again, his position flex and durability have him playing all over the line. Whether he’s lining up at end or tackle, and whether the Cowboys are in a 3-4 defense or a 4-3 scheme, Crawford is just happy to be in the trenches again.
“I missed everything. I missed being on that field. Just playing football,” Crawford said. “Making that big hit, going to war. I like the battle aspect of all this. I like that trench-warfare that I get to be a part of it every week. That’s just who I am. I like to battle.”
And it’s always easier to battle alongside some talented players like this group. The new players, coupled with DeMarcus Lawrence on the edge, have created a stable of defensive linemen that could very well be the best Crawford has seen since he was drafted back in 2012.
“I’ve definitely played alongside a lot of dogs over my time here,” Crawford said. “But this group has the potential to be one of the best. The guys that we have on the outside that can play inside and can also rush inside. Just how we can mix it up and just get after the quarterback and put a big stop on the run. It looks good to me right now.
“I feel pretty good about where we’re at. We’ve put in the work. I’m excited to get going with this group of men.”

WR K is the Cowboys’ Amari Cooper, WR L is the Cowboys’ Michael Gallup. I’ve made this point a lot, including earlier in this column, but I don’t care. Gonna hammer it until people understand what they’re dealing with here in Gallup.
Also, a lot is expected of Dak Prescott.
1. Dak Prescott finishes as the No. 1 QB in fantasy.
My thinking: The second-best QB last year in total points and the QB with the most rushing touchdowns since he came into the NFL, he’s playing for a new deal in a fantasy-friendly offense, and he has three big-play wide receivers in Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup and CeeDee Lamb.
